High Mileage Doesn't Mean Low Quality With Modern Cars

Are you convinced high mileage means low quality? That's the old way of thinking about used cars. In the old days, it was common for a vehicle with a lot of miles on it to be falling apart with ruined struts, rusted axles, cracked heads, clogged exhaust manifolds, busted radiators, the works. High mileage used vehicles often get a bad rap because it was earned from a lot of low-quality vehicles that didn't age well and weren't particularly designed to stand the test of time.

Modern vehicles aren't like that. In fact, a lot of newer generation brands have been designed around long-lasting parts, materials, and quality to help keep them on the road for more than 100,000 or even 200,000 miles. This is best showcased with many auto manufacturers using higher quality, light-weight steel for the frames to reduce corrosion and brittleness compared to previous generations. Modern cars also utilize features like variable valve timing, electronic start/stop, and continuously variable transmissions to reduce upfront wear and tear that many older vehicles suffered from when driven hard.

These kinds of advancements have helped modern cars retain their value and longevity, which is how some of the top-rated vehicles on the market today can last for over 200,000 miles and still keep going. This means if you buy a high mileage used car, as long as you keep up with the regular maintenance, it should last for a long time. That means that you can still go for an affordable option without having to worry it's going to immediately start to break down.

How to Maintain Your High Mileage Car

Most vehicles need to be serviced every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, which is simple enough to do when you bring it to us. However, when you buy a used vehicle with high mileage, you may not entirely know exactly how well the previous owner maintained it. But there is no need to worry because so long as a high-mileage used car still drives, you can still keep it maintained to the best of your ability. This usually includes having basic regularly scheduled maintenance performed by certified mechanics, like the ones here at Orange Coast CJDRF.

In addition to basic service intervals taking care of oil changes, tire rotations, and wheel alignments, you will also need to have the vehicle inspected, especially the fluid lines and hoses. Ensure that there are no leaks, and make sure that all the fluid levels are topped off or flushed when buying a high-mileage vehicle. Fresh fluid levels make a world of difference for keeping the mechanical components operating in top order. You will also want to have the brakes checked for wear; if the rotors or pads are too worn, they should be replaced.

You will definitely want to have the suspension, control arms, struts, and tie-rods inspected, too. Make sure that the steering is still responsive and sturdy, as it will ensure that you keep control of the vehicle on the road at all times. For high-mileage vehicles, it is also important to make sure the parking brake works as intended, the water pump is active, the spark plugs are fresh, and the filters are doing their job. If the timing belts and seals haven't been replaced, those should be top priority replacements, as well as ensuring the exhaust system works as intended and the drive shaft is solid, aligned, and operating in sync with the engine and transmission.
