Hybrid trucks may seem like they are just now making the scene, but Ram has been working for over a decade to perfect and refine the hybrid Ram truck experience. Ram first launched the Ram 1500 PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) in 2011. The truck was actually a tandem development effort between Chrysler and the United States Department of Energy. This initial launch was more of a marketing push than a widely available product, as only 140 demonstrator vehicles were released to select fleet partners around the nation. However, Ram used the PHEV trucks to gather important data on what worked and what didn't.
These original Ram hybrids featured a 5.7L HEMI V8 engine with a two-mode hybrid transmission. These Ram trucks were fitted with liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery packs that recharged through either regenerative braking or by simply plugging into 120-volt or 240-volt outlets. The United States military also took delivery of a large amount of Ram 1500 PHEV trucks. Renewable resources are an excellent part of a successful military, and the "reverse power flow" feature really piqued the military's interest, as Ram claimed that 6.6kW of power could be returned to the electric grid during charging.
From what was initially a boutique item that was not intended for mass consumption to what we have today, the hybrid Ram truck has had quite a journey! In 2019, Ram fully invested in hybrid truck technology and embraced it with the eTorque mild-hybrid system for added power and efficiency on Ram 1500 models. Because the eTorque system was introduced several years ago, this means that used hybrid trucks are easy to come by when you are shopping for a Ram.
Today, the Ram 1500 comes standard with a 3.6L Pentastar V6 with eTorque, and there is an available 5.7L V8 HEMI engine with eTorque. The only engine that has not received the eTorque system is the 3.0L EcoDiesel. The eTorque system adds a small electric motor directly to the engine to improve fuel economy without affecting strength and performance. In fact, hybrid Ram 1500 models with the eTorque system have higher tow ratings than traditional gasoline models, thanks to the added low-end torque provided by the electric motor.
