About
The Ram truck has been around for many years, being sold under the Dodge label until 2010, when it became its own standalone brand. Today, the Ram brand stands for trucks that are highly capable and dependable, with a wide variety of configurations and options to help each driver create their own customized driving experience. From bed and cabin combinations to choosing which powerful engine to place under the hood, there are many decisions to make when purchasing a Ram. However, each carefully made choice leads drivers closer to the perfect Ram for their lifestyle. A comprehensive Ram buyers guide would be many thousands of pages long, but we can provide you with some basic facts and figures to help guide you through those first hard decisions. And, of course, if you're the type of person who likes to experience things in person, the team here at Orange Coast Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram Fiat will be happy to show you our incredible inventory of Ram trucks to help you discover your own preferences.
2010 was a big year for Ram, as the brand debuted as its own division. Though the Ram truck had been wildly successful for years, there was some concern that the American public would be confused by the transition away from Dodge. The worries were short-lived, however, because the Ram truck continued to stand up to its tradition of greatness.
Ram was quick to establish a variety of trims that would appeal to a range of drivers. The 1500 Tradesman series aimed to please business owners who require a less expensive but still very comfortable work truck. The Laramie Longhorn trim provides plenty of upscale comfort and convenience features without hitting the top of the trim levels, and the Outdoorsman package adds features that would be extremely practical for those who enjoy a rugged lifestyle, including off-road tires, greater towing capacity, and a mud-ready interior.
In 2010, three engines were offered across the Ram 1500 lineup: a 3.7L V6, a 4.7L V8, and a 5.7L HEMI V8, which topped the performance charts with 390 horsepower and 407 lb-ft of torque. Standard safety features were typical for the time period and included anti-lock brakes, airbags, and Trailer Sway Control. Unlike other trucks, the 2011 Ram 1500 also offered multi-link coil spring rear suspension, providing drivers with a smooth, responsive ride, regardless of terrain or hours spent behind the wheel.
Given the rousing success of the 2010 and 2011 models, the 2012 version of the Ram 1500 brought just a few changes. Automotive experts lauded the vehicle as being equal parts comfortable, refined, and rugged, with more styling than was offered in most trucks of that model year. It had a useful array of features and options, including Surround Sound audio, the RamBox cargo management system, and additional side-seat airbags.
It may seem that 2013 would be too soon for a refresh, but Ram was ready to explore opportunities. The 3.7L V6 was retired, and a new V6 was offered––this version was a 3.6L Pentastar V6 that provides 305 horsepower, can tow up to 6,500 pounds, and is economical enough to provide 25 miles per gallon on the highway in the 2013 Ram 1500. Electric power steering and an 8-speed automatic transmission were also added to the Ram arsenal in 2013.
The already smooth-riding coil spring suspension was further enhanced in 2013 with the option for rear air suspension, which adjusts depending on how loaded the truck is. A diesel engine option first appeared in 2014 in the form of a 3.0L turbodiesel V6. Given the power of the recently added Pentastar V6 and the popularity of the HEMI V8, the old 4.7L V8 was dropped.
By 2017, the Ram 1500 could be found in up to 11 different trims, three cab styles, three bed lengths, and three engines, creating a list of options and possibilities of mathematical proportions. Yet standard features remained top-notch, with features like cruise control, automatic headlights, and hill-start assist onboard for all options. This tradition continued in 2018 when the rearview camera, 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system with high-resolution graphics, 4G LTE Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth––all offered as part of the standard package.
Engine options had remained largely the same since 2013, but that would change in 2019. A 3.6L V6 with eTorque mild-hybrid technology became the base engine, adding a 48-volt battery pack and electric motor-generator to improve torque without guzzling enormous quantities of fuel. The eTorque system was also offered as an option on the 5.7L V8 engine.
Today, the Ram 1500 provides options at every opportunity. The five engine options include a 5.7L Hemi V8 with or without eTorque, the 3.6L Pentastar V6 with eTorque, a 3.0L Ecodiesel, and a supercharged 6.2L HEMI V8 that's offered only on the new TRX model. The gas-powered tow rating has climbed to a mighty 12,750 pounds, with Ecodiesel fuel economy leaping to an unprecedented 33 miles per gallon highway.
Over the past ten years, Ram has managed to consistently engineer vehicles that stand the test of time, with engines that are both powerful and efficient, features that drivers look forward to enjoying, and a range of trims and options that help drivers find their ultimate partner on the road.
If you were looking only at pictures online, it might be difficult to determine which truck is the Ram 1500, the Ram 2500, and the Ram 3500. In person, it's a little easier. The Ram 1500 is a light-duty, half-ton truck. While powerful and durable, it cannot compare to its larger, heavy-duty siblings. The Ram 2500 is considered a three-quarter-ton heavy-duty truck, while the Ram 3500 is a one-ton heavy-duty truck.
Perhaps the most obvious way to determine which Ram truck is a 3500 is the addition of dual rear wheels, known colloquially as a "dually" setup. This configuration increases payload ratings and towing capacity, especially when using gooseneck or fifth-wheel hitches. A stronger base supports heavier weight.
The Ram 1500 is offered in an almost mind-boggling arrangement of trims, options, packages, engines, bed and cabin combinations, and power trains. The Ram 2500 and 3500 offer fewer choices but are specifically designed to provide robust offerings, including the basic Tradesman trim and the luxurious Limited trim. Typically, one gas-powered and one diesel engine are offered in the heavy-duty trucks, both of which are capable of towing loads in the five-digit range, depending on the trim, configuration, and towing features added.
Inside the cabin of each, you'll find plenty of legroom and headroom, along with standard features that work for every driver. That includes the Uconnect infotainment system, a suite of trailer support features with an even greater array of optional add-ons, and safety features that make sense for a larger, heavier, more powerful truck. Adaptive LED forward lighting, enhanced automatic braking paired with a forward collision alert, and blind-spot monitoring that takes trailer length into consideration are just a few ways the Ram 2500 and 3500 accommodate heavy-duty driving.
The 2022 Ram 1500 is a capable light-duty truck, and the standard-level 1500 provides four engine options. Most other leading trucks do not offer that many engine options, but the Ram 1500 allows you to personalize your trucking experience. Each engine option is exciting in its own way, and don't let the engine size fool you into thinking that smaller automatically means weaker and bigger automatically means better.
If torque is your thing, you'll want to go with the 3.0-liter Ecodiesel V6 engine, which is actually the smallest engine of them all. Despite displacing only three liters, this V6 turbodiesel engine can provide 480 pound-feet of torque and a towing capacity of up to 12,560 pounds. That is more torque and towing than most other trucks reach on any engine, so why not get the better specs while having a more efficient engine? Diesel certainly pays off in the long run, so you might even save some money over time. If raw horsepower is your thing, then you'll want to go with the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine, which reaches up to 395 horsepower.
V8 engines continue to prove themselves year after year, and the exciting thing about the HEMI V8 is that it uses eTorque mild hybrid technology, meaning that you'll have a little bit of electrified power in your Ram 1500. The attached electric motor fills out the lower end of the torque curve, giving you almost diesel-like low-end power with the simplicity of a gasoline engine.
As we cover the 2022 Ram 1500 and its capabilities, it is important to know that this truck can be taken to an even higher level. The Ram TRX is technically a Ram 1500, but it is a breed all its own. There's a lot to get excited about when it comes to the 2022 TRX, especially in the departments of engineering and style, but since we're already on the topic of engineering, we'll start there.
The big engineering feature of the 2022 Ram 1500 TRX is the supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V8 Engine. What does supercharging do to the 2022 TRX? It provides 702 horsepower, 650 pound-feet of torque, and a top speed of 118 miles per hour. You will not find those specs anywhere else on a pickup truck, and if power is your thing, then you'll want to jump on the 2022 Ram TRX because this supercharged engine is exclusive to the model.
It's not just the power of this engine that makes it exciting; it's about working your way up to that power. With a truck that is able to go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 4.5 seconds, you'll have an acceleration rate to beat any other full-size truck on the market. We think you'll have a great time in the 2022 TRX.
We mentioned that the TRX exceeds the Ram 1500 in style, and we don't want to leave you hanging. The TRX builds upon all your favorite styling features of the 1500 but adds a ferocity that makes it even more of a beast. With wide fenders, a highly-styled grill, and LED amber identification lamps in the hood scoop, you'll notice right away that there's more going on with this truck than with the 1500. The grille re-styling has its fashion purposes, but it also contributes to the truck's immense power because it increases airflow. Unsurprisingly, this increased airflow, along with other features, makes the TRX an ideal off-roading vehicle. The TRX is a champion of trucking capability and design. We think you'll like it quite a bit, but if you need proof, then come on in for a test drive.
The 2022 Ram 2500 is for anybody who needs to take things up a level with the power, strength, and capability of the truck. As a heavy-duty truck, it orients its functionality more towards work and heavy-lifting. With this increase in capability come two dynamic engine options.
First is the 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine. Already this engine is even larger than the supercharged HEMI in the TRX. The big benefit of this engine is that it is well-balanced, providing a generous amount of capability in all areas, with 410 horsepower, 429 pound-feet of torque, a payload capacity of 4,010 pounds, and a towing capacity of 17,540 pounds. You never have too much or too little of anything with this engine, and it certainly is highly capable.
Going a step up to the available 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel I-6 engine, you will actually take a slight dip in power and payload, which go down to 370 horsepower and 3,160 pounds, respectively. So, what's the benefit? Well, the benefit is actually quite huge since you'll have 850 pound-feet of torque and a towing capacity of up to 20,000 pounds. If you're a worker looking for a truck that can work just as hard as you do, then this turbodiesel engine is probably a good choice. 20,000 pounds is a crazy amount, and you'll be able to tow all kinds of cargo with numbers like that.
The 2022 Ram 2500 also features specialized technology to make your work life easier. With a 360-degree surround-view camera, hitching your trailer will be far easier. The 2500 is even able to monitor your trailer's tire pressure (yes, not only your vehicle's tire pressure but your trailer's tire pressure), which means that you'll be well-connected with your trailer. If you're looking for a workhorse of a truck, the 2022 Ram 2500 will have you moving in the right direction. But, if you need a workhorse of a truck, we've got another trick up our sleeve for you.
The 2022 Ram 3500 is a truck that is meant for those who need to do work. The truck offers the same two engine options as the 2500 but with more payload and towing capacity per engine. The 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine offers a payload capacity of 7,680 pounds and a towing capacity of 18,210 pounds, while the 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel I-6 engine works its way up to a payload capacity of 6,840 pounds and a towing capacity of 22,670 pounds. Already the 3500 is operating on a higher level, but when it comes to upping its game, the 2022 Ram 3500 does not stop there.
The 3500 adds an additional engine option with the available 6.7-liter high-output Cummins turbodiesel. The name is similar, but the key is "high output," and this engine lives up to its title. This engine offers 420 horsepower, which is certainly an exciting amount by anyone's trucking standards, and a payload capacity of 6,570 pounds will have you hauling cargo at a capable level. But those two specs are only the beginning. What comes next is going to blow your mind: with best-in-class torque of 1,075 pound-feet and a towing capability of 37,090 pounds, you'll be working like never before. This is an exciting truck, and the numbers don't lie. If you need to work, then there's no other choice but the 2022 Ram 3500.
