The Ram TRX is a version of the Ram 1500 that has been turned up to 11 and taken to the next level in terms of performance both on and off the road. On paper, that might sound like it is just the Ram 1500 with a better engine. In reality, however, it goes so far beyond the 1500 that it justifies being its own model and not simply a trim.
For starters, the Ram TRX features an absolute monster of an engine: a supercharged 6.2L HEMI V8 that delivers 702 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque, making it the most powerful production half-ton pickup on the road. There is no other truck out there that sounds like the TRX, and Ram boasts that it goes from 0 to 60 in 4.5 seconds. According to Car and Driver's testing, however, it can make that leap in just 3.7 seconds and can run the quarter-mile in 12.3 seconds, getting up to 110 mph in the process.
The drag strip performance of the TRX is amazing, yet that is only half the picture as this is also an outstanding off-road pickup. Thanks to Bilstein Black Hawk e2 shocks, it offers 11.8 inches of ground clearance, with 13 inches of front suspension travel and 14 inches of rear suspension travel. It has 32 inches of water fording capability, due in large part to the beadlock-capable wheels that are wrapped in 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler all-terrain tires. If you are interested in a truck that cannot be beaten on the trail, then this is it.
And yet, Ram's designers were not happy to leave it there, as the TRX also has one of the most luxurious and impressive interiors we have ever seen. A flat-bottom steering wheel with integrated aluminum paddle shifters reminds you of how much power you have at your command, while a center console shifter gives you total control. For 2022, the 12-inch infotainment display showcases a new Uconnect 5C system with performance and off-road features built into it, plus an available 19-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system that takes your sound experience to the next level.
The quintessential Ram truck, the Ram 1500 is a full-size, light-duty pickup that is designed for a wide range of uses and built to work as hard as you do. One of the most impressive trucks on the road, the Ram 1500 not only delivers incredible capability and performance, but also features one of the most sophisticated interiors in the industry. Over the last couple of years, the Ram pickup has truly proven itself to be the leader in luxury, leaving every other manufacturer scrambling to catch up. For 2022, the infotainment system has been updated and features a stunning 12-inch display that supports a Uconnect 5 system with faster speeds and more memory than the previous system had to offer.
In terms of performance, the Ram 1500 gives you everything you could want from a full-size truck. The standard engine is a 3.6L Pentastar V6 with eTorque, a mild hybrid system, that delivers 305 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque. If you want more power, then there is an available 5.7L HEMI V8 engine that offers 395 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque – this engine can also be had with the eTorque mild hybrid to boost power and towing further. Finally, there is a 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 engine available, which delivers 260 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque to provide impressive fuel efficiency and massive towing. As you can see, the Ram 1500 is a fantastic work truck that can handle a lot of weight for whatever you need – but it is also a terrific option for enjoying the weekend. That towing power is just as good for a boat as it is for a trailer full of lumber, and the drainable RamBox storage areas are perfect for tools and equipment or for filling with ice and beverages. If you like to hit the trail but don't want to spring for a TRX, then the Rebel trim is a great option thanks to a new air filtration system, 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires, and more available off-road features.
If you are looking for something similar to the Ram 1500 but with even more impressive power to get some of the biggest jobs done, then the Ram 2500 is a great option. This builds on what the 1500 has to offer, but with more powerful engines and a stronger frame, the Ram 2500 gives you greater towing and payload capacities. Although you can still certainly enjoy this truck for relaxing, it is built to get your job done, so the muscle it has to offer really is ideal for handling the workweek.
In contrast to the four engines offered on the Ram 1500, there are just two engines to choose from on the Ram 2500, but they are both very impressive. The standard engine is a 6.4L HEMI V8 that delivers 410 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque for greater power than the 5.7L HEMI in the Ram 1500. Of course, no truck of this caliber would be complete without a diesel option. You can choose an available 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel I-6 for the Ram 2500, which delivers 370 hp and a massive 850 lb-ft of torque. In terms of towing and payload, these engines offer:
Perhaps best of all, the Ram 2500 is clearly built with a focus on handling serious towing thanks to innovative technology and features. For example, the available digital rearview mirror has a tow mode that provides you with a view through a trailer-connected camera, so you have an unobstructed view behind you while towing. The tire pressure monitoring system works with connected trailers to keep you aware of tire pressure while towing, and an available fifth-wheel/gooseneck prep package includes integrated mounting hardware in the bed.
If you need the most capable Ram truck on the road, a truck designed to tackle any job you throw at it, then the Ram 3500 is the one for you. This is the pinnacle of Ram capability, offering towing and payload capacities far beyond even the impressive abilities of the Ram 1500 and 2500 trucks. You can choose from the same two engines as the Ram 2500, though a third option is available for the 3500 to take towing and payload to the next level.
The standard engine on the Ram 3500 is a 6.4L HEMI V8 that delivers 410 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque. An available 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel I-6 offers 370 hp and 850 lb-ft of torque, much like the Ram 2500. Unique to this truck, however, is an available High-Output version of the diesel engine that boosts that up to 420 hp and a monstrous 1,075 lb-ft of torque, blowing away other trucks on the road. Combined with available dual rear wheels, this engine offers unbeatable fifth-wheel towing potential.
You can see that the towing and payload potential of the Ram 3500 is superior to the other two models across the board – thanks in large part to the dually offering. This is an incredible truck that is built to get the job done, with a kick-out bed step for easy bed access and a power-release dampened tailgate that allows for easy opening and closing. Bed lights let you see your cargo day or night, while available bed power outlets are perfect for plugging in power tools and other equipment at a job site.
The 2020 Ram 1500 underwent a complete redesign for the 2019 model year, adding increased capability, improved fuel economy, and a greater emphasis on luxury. With the 2020 model year, even the most basic model—the Tradesman—boasts a striking interior, a comfortable ride—with the new and innovative coil-spring suspension—and lots of useful technology. Not to mention a great deal of towing and payload power. While the range-topping Limited trim has earned the designation of “luxury” truck, all other trims are equally impressive in their own right. And now there is a new diesel engine that can be added to any trim level, so you are free to create the truck of your dreams, and not have to pay for extras you don’t necessarily need. Let’s take a look at what specifically you’ll find in each trim, as each trim is loaded with many standard and optional features. Keep in mind the RamBox bed storage is optional on all trim levels, and regular and dual-pane sunroofs are options on every trim level except the Tradesman.
The 2020 Ram 1500 offers an impressive number of standard features, and an impressive standard powertrain as well. Starting with the entry-level Tradesman trim, you can expect features such as a 5-inch touchscreen, voice command, Bluetooth streaming audio, remote keyless entry, electric park brake, and a ParkView rear back-up camera. There is no regular cab available, so the base model also includes a 4-door quad cab. Other standard equipment includes an eTorque V6 with an 8-speed automatic transmission. This model also comes with a 23-gallon gas tank, coil-spring suspension, trailer-sway control, and heated, power-adjustable side mirrors. That’s a tremendous value for an entry-level truck. And you get all of this for only $32,145. With this setup, you are ready to hit the road and get to work.
The standard engine is a 3.6-liter V6 with 305 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque. This engine is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and returns 20/25 MPG city/highway. With this much power and efficiency, it’s hard to find a better standard powertrain, making the Tradesman model an incredible value.
Moving up to the Big Horn trim (or the Lone Star trim as it’s known in Texas and some surrounding states) brings more impressive features to modernize and stylize your Ram pickup truck. Already standard is Ram’s innovative coil-spring suspension, which significantly helps with ride comfort, handling, and trailer control, so you know you already have a smooth ride. Other trucks in the segment still use the traditional leaf-spring setup. But with the Big Horn trim, many interior and exterior features, such as leather accents and chrome front and rear bumpers, grille, and door handles, add another level of style and comfort. Other features include an available Uconnect 8.4-inch touchscreen, 20-inch chrome or painted wheels, and class-exclusive in-floor storage. You’ll also appreciate the 60/40 split-folding rear seats for even more cargo space.
One of the biggest differences between the Big Horn trim and the entry-level trim is the number of features available. Both the H1 and H2 packages are available, while some of the upper-trim level features are also available, giving you a chance to customize your Ram to your needs. Some of these features include front and rear parking sensors, remote ignition, two rear USB ports, two household-style power outlets, a fully damped tailgate, and upgraded gauges.
The Rebel is the model that offers a dedicated off-roader. The Rebel's features include a one-inch factory lift, standard electronic locking rear differential, skid plates, Bilstein shocks, and an electronic transfer case. You’ll also find 33-inch Wrangler DuraTrac tires, off-road bumpers, tow hooks, and hill-descent control. The Rebel can also be found with a 5.7-liter V8 engine. This engine boasts impressive numbers with 395 hp and 410 lb-ft. And fuel economy for that engine sits at 17/23 MPG city/highway. Additionally, all of this comes at the price of $44,890.
Also included in the Rebel trim are the X1 and X2 equipment packages, which are similar to the H1 and H2 packages but with focus more on off-road touches. This is a trim for the off-road enthusiast.
The Laramie trim is the first of the luxury trim levels. Here you’ll find many luxury features, such as auto-dimming exterior mirrors, unique color schemes, driver memory settings, leather upholstery, and heated and ventilated front seats. Most of the H1 and H2 features are standard with the Laramie trim. Other luxury features include a 9-speaker Alpine audio system and a 7-inch premium digital driver cluster display. Remote start is also included with this trim level.
With the Laramie trim, you’ll feel like you are in a luxury car more so than a truck capable of towing up to 12,750 pounds and carrying a payload of up to 2,320 pounds. Inside you’ll find Uconnect 12.0, featuring a largest-in-class 12-inch touchscreen, as well as full-screen navigation. This is a trim with lots of value as you are moving into the luxury realm.
Moving up in luxury trims, the Laramie Longhorn takes luxury and style to another level. Features include bold chrome accents and striking two-tone color options, premium leather, and real barn wood accents, and leather-wrapped dashboard and full-leather seats. Of course, the luxury touches do not stop there: heated full-leather rear seats with available ventilation, and front tow hooks and available power running boards. This is ranch-inspired luxury with 20-inch wheels, automatic high beams, side steps, and heated and ventilated front bucket seats.
Other features include Uconnect 4C NAV with an 8.4-inch display, as well as SiriusXM Traffic Plus, Travel Link, and Guardian connected services. HD radio is another option, which transmits a high-quality digital signal that’s free—no subscription required. You’ll also find options that you never know you need until you have them, such as rain-sensing windshield wipers, pickup box lighting, and, of course, front and rear park assist with stop.
The Limited trim represents the pinnacle of the Ram 1500 in terms of design, functionality, and style. Outfitted with many premium details, the latest tech, and eye-catching exterior touches, the Limited trim has it all. Standard on the Limited model is the class-exclusive active-level four-corner air suspension. With the air suspension, you can adjust ride height to aid fuel efficiency and off-road ability. This is a state-of-the-art model and features more luxury amenities than you will find in any other truck in the segment, and it’s not even close. On all other trims, the air suspension is optional.
You’ll also find Uconnect with a 12-inch display with navigation, blind-spot monitoring with cross-path and trailer detection, an available Harman Kardon 19-speaker sound system, a wireless charging pad, and premium leather-trimmed bucket seats. The list keeps going as the Limited trim seems loaded with an endless amount of luxury features: front wheel well liners, luxury front, and rear floor mats, remote tailgate release—to name a few more. If you are looking for a luxury truck, you cannot do any better than the Ram’s Limited trim.

Such powerful trucks are not right for everyone, however, and can be overkill if you do not need everything they offer––but they are perfect for anyone that needs a heavy-duty pickup.
