Used Dodge Challenger for Sale

Almost everyone knows that tingling on the back of the neck sensation you get when you hear the sound of a classic Dodge Challenger. The engine just ignites a sense of excitement and a pleasant feeling of nostalgia because this muscle car is so deeply integrated into American car history. You swear that when you hear that engine and see that distinct body style, a race will start, and checkered flags will start waving. This is a feeling so many drivers want to capture and recreate, which is why there's always a market for a used Dodge Challenger for sale.

The Dodge Challenger has always sparked conversation among classic car lovers because each of its generations is so distinctly different, and its origins are certainly anything but ordinary. The first generation (1970 to 1974) was built on the Chrysler E-body platform and came in both hardtop and convertible styles. It showed plenty of overlap with the Plymouth Barracuda and was an instant classic. However, the second generation (1978 to 1983) was a badge-engineered version of the Mitsubishi Galant Lambda. "Badge engineered" is a fancy automobile world term for selling a car from another brand under your name.

Finally, the third generation hit the market in 2008 with tons of steam. It was the fastest and most powerful Challenger ever––and far more impressive than the second generation––as it was intended to rival the Ford Mustang and the Chevrolet Camaro. After 53 years of high-speed thrills, Chrysler recently announced that 2023 will be the final model year for this beloved car. So, to honor a great run, let's dive deeper into its history.

The Dodge Challenger Story

The first-generation Dodge Challenger was arguably one of the most successful muscle cars to ever hit the American market. It immediately got people talking with its unique design and fantastic performance. It actually plucked its name from a special edition for the 1959 Dodge Coronet called the Dodge Silver Challenger. The original Challenger shared its underpinnings with the Plymouth Barracuda but stood out because of its four headlights (compared to the two of the Barracuda).

People were originally excited about this first generation, but intrigue slowed down for a while because Dodge simply didn't make any updates. In fact, increasingly strict emissions regulations meant that the car actually became less powerful as the years passed, with the iconic HEMI engine only being offered for the first two model years. In 1974, the Malaise Era was in full swing, and Dodge pulled the plug on the Challenger.

The second generation arrived in 1977 and was more for joy riders than thrill seekers. Its most powerful engine was a 2.6L four-cylinder offering no more than 105 hp. It also didn't have the Challenger look that drivers loved. It enjoyed more headroom and a larger trunk than the previous generation, but it was moving more into the passenger vehicle space. Even the two modified versions upgraded by the legendary Carroll Shelby were not enough to make the second-generation Challenger a performance icon.

By the time the third generation rolled around in 2008, Dodge understood that people wanted power and speed from the Challenger. So, we got some new models with explosive engines. The popular SRT Hellcat model came out during this generation, boasting a supercharged HEMI V8 with 707 hp. We also got the SRT Demon, a purpose-built factory drag racer that can run the quarter mile in 9.65 seconds thanks to a 6.2L Hellcat engine boasting 840 hp. Undeniably, drivers are sad to see the end of the third-generation Challenger, but it definitely went out with a bang.
