There's no denying how popular the Ford F-150 is. Ford has spent over 100 years carefully developing its trucks into the modern F-150 we all know and love today. The F-150 can trace its ancestry all the way back to 1917 and the Ford Model TT, but the legendary F-series didn't hit the market until 1948. Since that time, the F-series line of Ford pickups, including the F-150, has risen to become not only the best-selling truck in America but the best selling vehicle in America overall.

Today, we know the Ford F-150 as a do-it-all tough and gritty pickup that never ceases to amaze us with its capabilities. It's not simply popular because of how long it's been around - it's popular because it gets the job done, no matter what. To be the best-selling vehicle in America, beating out even significantly less expensive cars and SUVs, you have to put forth some serious effort and back it up with the best features.

The Ford F-150 does all of that, which is why people keep coming back for more. For other automobile manufacturers, it's hard to compete with the F-150. It consistently has top trailering features, the best engine options, and incredible towing and hauling capacities. That's all on top of modern interior features and technology to keep you comfortable and safe on the road.

If you're looking for a used Ford F-150, you have plenty of options. Even though used vehicles may have a bit of mileage and a few bumps or bruises, they're still built to perform - or at least Ford F-150s are. You don't lose your towing capacity because it's a used vehicle. This is why used Ford F-150s are still very popular. They don't have the big-ticket prices of new F-150s, but they still have the top qualities you want and need.

What Engines Are Found on the F-150?

Shopping for a used F-150 will present you with a wide range of engine options. Ford knows that not everyone is looking to accomplish the same tasks or things with their F-150s, so it's essential to have different engine options for different types of work and fun. To keep things simple, we'll focus on the thirteenth generation of the truck, which was produced from 2015 to 2020 and makes up the bulk of the used market. Overall, there are six different engines found in this generation:

3.5L V6

The 3.5L V6 engine has an output of 282 hp and 253 lb-ft of torque. This is your standard F-150 engine, with more than enough power to get your pickup going and make sure you can tow and haul safely. Since this is the standard engine type, you're sure to find lower prices on F-150s with this engine equipped. For 2018, the 3.5L was replaced with a smaller but more powerful 3.3L V6 producing 290 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque.

2.7L EcoBoost V6

Moving up, you have the famous EcoBoost technology on a 2.7L V6 engine. This turbocharged engine has an output of 325 hp and 375 lb-ft of torque. Overall, you get a big boost on the performance numbers compared to the 3.3L V6 engine, which is sure to improve your overall driving experience. It's especially important to look at your torque numbers, which play a large role in towing and hauling. For 2018, the 2.7L EcoBoost was further upgraded to produce an incredible 400 lb-ft of torque.

5.0L V8

It's hard to say no to an engine as big and famous as the 5.0L V8 engine found on many Ford F-150s. This monster of an engine has an output of 385 hp and 387 lb-ft of torque. While on paper similar to the EcoBoost, the V8 doesn't need turbocharging to achieve its output. For 2018, the output of the 5.0L was improved to 395 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque.

3.5L EcoBoost V6

Your second EcoBoost option is the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine. This engine has an output of 365 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque, making it a large improvement over the smaller EcoBoost engine, both in horsepower and torque. For 2017, those numbers went up even higher to 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. With that sort of performance, you're sure to have a powerhouse of a vehicle.

3.0L Power Stroke V6 Diesel

If you want a diesel truck, then you will have to look for a 2018 or later used F-150. However, if you can find one of the rare PowerStroke turbo-diesel F-150's, then you will be rewarded with some serious performance. This engine has an output of 440 lb-ft of torque at only 1,750 rpm, making it an excellent choice for towing. Plus, the fuel economy is rather good as well.

High Output 3.5L EcoBoost V6

The most powerful engine option on the Ford F-150 is the High Output 3.5L EcoBoost V6. This performance-focused engine was introduced in 2017 and generates no less than 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. This engine isn't meant for just driving your F-150 around town, though it'll do that just fine. Rather, it's meant for long days of hard work, with no breaks in between. If you need a real workhorse of an F-150, the High Output EcoBoost is the engine for you.

What Are the Safety Features of the F-150?

Recent F-150 models come with many different safety features. Nearly all used F-150s include standard features such as a rearview camera with Dynamic Hitch Assist, multiple airbags throughout the interior, a tire pressure monitoring system, and anti-lock brakes. This makes the F-150 a safe choice from the worksite to the highway.

More recent and higher trim models are also available with the Ford Co-Pilot360 suite of advanced driver assistance technologies. This adds features such as adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring that make for a safer and less stressful driving experience. Make sure to double-check which safety features are available on any used F-150 that you are considering.
