Although brand-new cars get a lot of attention, used SUVs can be the perfect option for many people. The SUV segment continues expanding as more drivers gravitate to vehicles with plenty of passenger and cargo space. Whether you’re about to purchase your first SUV or have been a fan of the bodystyle for a while, you may find the wide range of subcategories a little confusing. Which size is right for you? Your options range from tiny subcompact models to massive land yachts designed for large families.
Our desire for SUVs won’t slow down anytime soon, and manufacturers are hard at work designing more options to satisfy drivers from all walks of life. As the EV segment grows, more new electric models will feature the SUV bodystyle. You’ll also find a range of hybrid versions available right now, including super popular SUVs like the Toyota RAV4 Prime, the Jeep Wrangler 4xe, and the Ford Escape Hybrid.
Typically, subcompact SUVs are designed especially for commuters and first-time buyers. Models like the Chevy Trailblazer, Jeep Renegade, and MINI Cooper Countryman are all examples of subcompact SUVs. Buyers in this category will find plenty of value-oriented models, like the Kia Seltos, that still offer modern infotainment and driver-assist technology, along with excellent fuel economy ratings and low price tags.
Not all subcompact SUVs are designed for affordability––luxury automakers have joined the category, too. The BMW X1 is a popular five-passenger subcompact model with a premium feel. Other luxury brands, including Volvo, Audi, and Cadillac, also make subcompact SUVs filled with high-end features. Some subcompact SUVs even offer trims with performance-oriented drivetrains and engines, like the Mazda CX-30 Turbo or Hyundai Kona N.
Compact SUVs are among the most popular, which might explain why so many different models are available. Some manufacturers even offer multiple models in this sought-after category. You’ll find popular nameplates like the Jeep Compass, Ford Escape, and Toyota RAV4 in this category, along with the Mazda CX-5 and Nissan Rogue. Some of the best-selling SUVs are in the compact class.
Why is this segment so popular? Compact SUVs offer arguably the best blend of value and fuel economy on one end and luxury and performance on the other. Buyers will find multiple options regardless of their needs, including budget or luxury must-haves, with options ranging from the Honda CR-V to the Mercedes-AMG GLC and just about every price point and luxury level in between.
Midsize SUVs are the darlings of small families. Practical in size yet surprisingly roomy, many midsize models deliver big on affordability. Buyers may perhaps recognize the model names in this category more than any other since many have been in production for decades. Models like the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Hyundai Santa Fe, and Toyota Highlander are among the most popular of all time.
Many of these midsize SUVs even offer a third row of seats without buyers having to move up a size. Choosing a three-row SUV will provide plenty of room, but even five-passenger midsize SUVs have a leg up on their smaller siblings. First, there’s usually much more available cargo space. Additionally, midsize SUVs typically offer more towing capability, so finding a model that can haul your RV or boat is easy. These benefits resonate with families, making midsize SUVs incredibly popular.
Moving up to a full-size SUV is often the only option for larger families. It’s not enough to have a tight third row when you’re carting multiple kids (and their friends) to school, sports, and activities. Busier, bigger families require a vehicle with space for everyone to stretch out, along with a cavernous cargo hold for all their gear. Vehicles like the Ford Expedition, GMC Yukon, and Chevy Suburban are part of the full-size SUV category.
Jokingly referred to as “land yachts,” large SUVs tend to be built on pickup truck platforms, making them capable haulers. Many, like the Chevy Tahoe, seat up to nine passengers. Others, like the Ford Expedition and the Wagoneer, come in two sizes: large and really large, with upsized options like the Expedition MAX and Wagoneer L. Full-size SUVs can stretch to an overall length of over 225 inches.
Kicking off our top 10 list of the best used SUVs that money can buy is the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox. The first reason this vehicle made our list is that it is a newer pre-owned model. This means that you can find a well-equipped example for an affordable price. Available in four trims with both gasoline and diesel-powered engine options, this family-friendly compact crossover is quite a catch. The 2018 model is the first year of the third generation and comes with advanced features that previous models did not have. You can easily find one with luxury features such as perforated leather seats, a hands-free liftgate, a wireless charging pad, and remote start technology. You can get almost anything you wish to find on a newer model, all at the lower price of a used SUV.
Another top compact crossover that you can find pre-owned is the 2018 Toyota RAV4. This five-seater is practical, reliable, and great for adventurous folks. It is based more on utility than comfort, so people who enjoy heading off the beaten path may like it a bit more than the Chevy Equinox. It is available in six trims, and one of those is the Adventure. This particular version comes with fender flares for a sportier look and a raised suspension that gives you 6.5 inches of ground clearance. Driver-assist systems and convenience features are also very generous. You can easily find a RAV4 that comes with heated seats, navigation, Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and a 360-degree camera system for parking.
If you are searching for a more affordable compact crossover, you can opt for a used 2016 Hyundai Tucson. It is right at that age when it is not new, but it also is not too old. It is just right. You can find these vehicles with advanced technology such as Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, which is ideal for people who need to stay in touch with their family, friends, or co-workers while on the road. What is unique about this particular model is that the Hyundai engineers used a design language called Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 to create this beauty. Its sleek lines and curves make it look like so much more than an SUV. It is also three inches longer and one inch wider than previous models, giving you a bit more space for luggage, groceries, or sports gear.
For folks looking to save even more money without giving up that Bluetooth connectivity, the 2014 Ford Edge might be the best bet. Available in four trims, this five-seater is well equipped even on the base model. If you are a millennial, then you will definitely appreciate the CD player, USB port, and auxiliary jack that come with it. Sometimes breaking out the old CD collection for a long road trip is preferred over music streaming. These models are often fitted with add-ons and packages that include driver-assist features like Blind Spot Information System with cross-traffic alert, so finding an Edge with some pretty great features is not challenging.
Are you looking for a compact crossover with a little more flair? The 2017 Kia Sportage is a good pick. With seating for five people and a cargo area measuring 30.7 cu.ft., it is almost a midsize model. Folding down the back row of seating will expand the cargo area to a maximum of 60.1 cu.ft., which is ample for small families. Another reason why the 2017 Sportage made our list is because the vehicle underwent a complete redesign for this model year. That means that you get some worthwhile features without breaking your bank account. Also, if you happen to come across an EX and SX Turbo trim, you will be pleasantly surprised by the UVO telematics suite. It adds roadside assistance, speed tracking, geo-fencing, and stolen vehicle tracking.
Sticking with the compact crossover class, the 2017 Ford Escape is a popular used SUV option. Offered in three trims, the standard equipment for this model includes a CD player, USB port, Bluetooth connectivity, and the famous SYNC infotainment interface with smartphone integration via AppLink. Cruise control and a rearview camera are also included. This vehicle was produced with three different powertrains, and all of them are fuel-efficient. Some examples may even have leather upholstery and driver-assist features such as a Lane-Keeping System and an Enhanced Active Park Assist System.
The final compact SUV on this list is one of our personal favorites. In fact, if this was a list for only compact models, it would be #1. The 2018 Jeep Compass is the ideal used SUV, and you will be hard-pressed to find something you do not love about it. Available in four trims, you can find a Compass that is ideally suited for all of your driving needs. If you enjoy off-roading, we recommend the Trailhawk trim. This version gets skid plates, tow hooks, off-roading tires, and a raised suspension that allows you to crawl over rough terrain with no problem.
Moving on to our favorite midsize SUVs, the 2014 Mazda CX-9 is a solid choice. With three rows of seating and a V6 engine rumbling under the hood, this is a great family vehicle. It is affordable, and it is offered in three trims. Higher trims get Rear Cross Traffic Alert, a rear-seat entertainment system for the kids, and navigation to help you find the quickest route. If you are looking for comfort, convenience, and practicality, this may just be the right SUV for you.
Another great midsize SUV option is the 2017 Toyota Highlander. With seating for up to eight people, it is just the right size for families. Available in six trims, you can choose between a fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine or a more powerful V6 motor. With four USB ports installed throughout the cabin, you will not have to worry about your kids’ phones running out of charge. Standard on all 2017 Highlanders is the Toyota Safety Sense package. This comes with the Toyota Safety Sense bundle, including Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Auto High Beams, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, a Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, and a rearview camera.
Sitting at the #1 spot on our best used SUV list is the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee. This midsize model is the perfect fusion of luxury and technology with a sporty flair. Available in seven trims, you can find one that is exactly right for your driving needs. There are V6 and V8 engine options available, as well as a diesel motor, and the standard features include rear parking sensors, satellite radio, a seven-inch touchscreen interface, and compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Grand Cherokee Trailhawk is available as an affordable off-roading model, and the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk takes things to the next level. When equipped with the Quadra-Trac II or Quadra-Drive II four-wheel drive systems, no other midsize SUV out there can do what this beast can do. Plus, it is so customizable that finding one to suit your needs is almost guaranteed.
One of the biggest concerns many people have when looking at a used SUV for sale is the uncertainty of not knowing what it has been through. There is no way to know with 100% accuracy everything that happened to a used vehicle. That being said, you can greatly reduce some of this uncertainty and get far greater peace of mind by choosing a Certified Pre-Owned vehicle, such as the examples we offer here at Orange Coast CJDRF.
A CPO Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram, or Fiat is as close as you can get to a brand-new model while still enjoying the discounted price of a used SUV. In order for an SUV to qualify as a CPO model from the brands we carry, it must have fewer than 75,000 miles on it, cannot be more than five model years old, and needs a clean title. It must then pass a 125-point inspection to ensure it is of the highest quality possible and in great shape with fully functioning mechanical and electrical systems and no frame damage.
When you choose a CPO SUV, you also get incredible peace of mind thanks to Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, and Ram’s seven-year or 100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty and three-month or 3,000-mile maximum care warranty. These are provided by the manufacturer at no cost to you. If you want even more protection, there are a number of CPO upgrade warranty plans available. Please keep in mind that our CPO SUVs for sale are in limited supply with high demand, so check with us often to see what we have in stock, and if you see something you like, do not hesitate to contact us and reserve it.

If you’re concerned about interest rates and monthly payments being too high, we encourage you to reach out to a member of our finance team for personalized assistance.
Although there are many good reasons to pick a reputable dealership over a private seller when looking for a used SUV for sale, one of the main reasons is the level of long-term service and support you expect from a dealer. With a private seller, there is no guarantee that they are selling you a vehicle in good shape––but all of our used models are thoroughly inspected and are in the best condition possible. Further, if something should happen with your vehicle after a sale, you can bet the private seller you bought from will be nowhere to be found.
At Orange Coast CJDRF, you will always know where to turn whenever you need any service or repairs. Our Mopar service center can handle anything you need, from routine maintenance to more serious work after a collision or other incident. And with our parts department, we have a large inventory of parts on-hand to get your work done as quickly as possible; plus, we can order anything we might need that we do not have. That is just one more way we ensure that all of your needs are taken care of.
