SUV Showdown: 2020 Jeep Compass Versus 2020 Mazda CX-5
When it comes to the subcompact and compact crossover SUV class, it may feel like things are a little crowded. It may seem like there are an awful lot of options that all look the same. You'll start comparing vehicles like the 2020 Jeep Compass vs 2020 Mazda CX-5. Once you start sorting through all of the makes and models, however, youāll start noticing the differences that will help you find the perfect compact crossover SUV for you and your lifestyle.
Two very popular options this model year are the 2020 Jeep Compass and the 2020 Mazda CX-5. Both brands are well known for being high-quality vehicles with a reputation for being durable and dependable. But what are some of the factors that would encourage you to park one in your garage over another? As always, that will depend on your own preferences, driving style, budget, and needs, but the best way to decide between two vehicles is to do a side-by-side comparison of everything. From power, to space, and all the features you need out of a brand new SUV, letās take a look at the 2020 Jeep Compass and the 2020 Mazda CX-5 to see which is the best fit for you
Under the hood of every good vehicle is a powerful engine, and neither Jeep nor Mazda is willing to compromise power on their 2020 compact SUV models. The 2020 Compass is technically between subcompact and compact ratings, on the SUV size scale. You may hear it referred to as either, or even as a ātweener,ā depending on the source. It is still easily comparable to other subcompact SUVs on the market today, though.
The Jeep brand is practically synonymous with customization, so it may be somewhat surprising to learn that the 2020 Compass is offered with only one engine option. Itās a strong option, however: a 2.4L 4-cylinder engine that offers 180 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. Drivers can choose between front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, with the exception of the Trailhawk trim, which is available as an all-wheel drive only. There are several transmission options, as well. The standard Compass is a front-wheel drive with a six-speed automatic transmission, but drivers of the Sport and Latitude trims may opt for a six-speed manual version. Four-wheel drive models feature a nine-speed automatic.
All-wheel drive Compass models can tow up to 2,000 pounds and offer an impressive fuel economy. Front-wheel drive manual models offer 23 miles per gallon city and 32 miles per gallon highway, while front-wheel drive automatic models receive a similar 22 miles per gallon city and 31 miles per gallon highway. Four-wheel drive automatic versions maintain a similar fuel economy, at 22 miles per gallon city and 30 miles per gallon highway.
The 2020 Mazda CX-5 offers two engine choices, depending on the trim selected. Drivers of the Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring CX-5 will enjoy a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine with Mazdaās own SKYACTIV- G cylinder deactivation technology. This engine provides 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque, and comes standard with front-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is available with this engine, as well, though choosing this option reduced fuel economy from 25 miles per gallon city and 31 miles per gallon highway to 24 miles per gallon city and 30 miles per gallon highway.
The Grand Touring Reserve and Signature trim levels of the 2020 CX-5 include a turbocharged version of the same 2.5L 4-cylinder engine. With 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque, this engine provides more power, and is offered with standard all-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic transmission. The significant increase in zippiness does come at a cost, however, taking the fuel economy down to 22 miles per gallon city and 27 miles per gallon highway. When equipped with the standard 2.5L engine, the 2020 Mazda CX-5 can tow up to 2,000 pounds. The turbocharged version is capable of hauling 3,500 pounds.
One very important detail for SUV drivers in any segment is the ability to take advantage of the āutilityā of a āSports Utility Vehicle.ā That means having plenty of room for all of the people and things you need to take with you from Point A to Point B.
The 2020 Jeep Compass can comfortably seat five and includes a maximum cargo space of 59.8 cubic feet when the rear 60/40 split seat is folded. The rear cargo floor is adjustable, allowing drivers the ability to move the floor up and down to accommodate- or help protect- a variety of cargo. A one-touch power liftgate is also helpful for loading and loading goods ranging from weekly groceries to camping gear and more.
The 2020 Mazda CX-5 is slightly less roomy. Itās designed with safety equipment for up to five passengers, but the rear seat may feel cramped when occupied by three adults. The 40/20/40 rear seat can be folded in a variety of configurations to accommodate up to 59.6 cubic feet of stuff, and a rear power liftgate is available on the Grand Touring trim and above.
Even on a level playing field, most drivers are interested in more than just an engine and adequate space. Trim levels and packages often play a very important part in deciding which vehicle becomes your next choice. These various trims and packages allow drivers to customize their car and driving experience to fit into not only what they need, but also what they want in a car. After all, this is a very important investment!
The 2020 Jeep Compass is offered in four basic trims: Sport, Latitude, Limited, and Trailhawk. There are also a few limited edition trims, such as the Altitude, the High Altitude, Sun and Wheel, Sun and Safety, and North Edition, all of which combine various optional features and packages.
The Sport trim starts with a highly convenient variety of features, such as heated mirrors, adjustable front seats, two USB ports, automatic dual-zone climate control, and a 7-inch touchscreen. Stepping up, the Latitude adds roof rails, rear air vents, a deluxe cloth and faux leather interior with a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and keyless door locks and ignition.
Compassās Limited trim is considered the most luxurious and comfort-based trim, with soft-touch features like an all-leather interior, power driverās seat, heated front seats and steering wheel, and an upgraded infotainment package that includes an 8.4-inch touchscreen with a color information display and both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Convenience is also integrated into the Limited trim, with features like an automatically dimming rearview mirror and a 115V household power outlet.
In contrast, the Trailhawk trim is a reminder that this is, after all, a Jeep. With a raised suspension, skid plates, off-road ready tires, and the Selec-Terrain system that helps all good Jeeps crawl further and ford deeper, the Trailhawk also includes the upgraded touchscreen and many of the comfort features of the Limited.
The 2020 Mazda CX-5 is offered in five trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve, and Signature. Just two optional packages are offered, which add higher trim level equipment to the Touring and Grand Touring trims.
The base Sport shares a name with the base Compass model, but the features are very different. The interior of Mazdaās Sport features black cloth, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and remote keyless entry with push-button start. The infotainment system starts with a 7-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and two USB ports. Outside, drivers get LED headlights with automatic high beams and rain-sensing windshield wipers.
The Touring trim adds some technology to the comfort and convenience features, such as a power-adjustable driverās seat, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and two rear USB charging ports. The rear passengers also receive vents and an armrest. Grand Touring drivers will enjoy leather seating, power sunroof, and a 10 speaker premium Bose audio system, along with heated side mirrors and adaptable nighttime lighting from the headlamps.
The Grand Touring Reserve adds plenty of comfort-oriented technology, including an enhanced 8-inch touchscreen display, a head-up display, heated steering wheel, rear outboard seats, and ventilated front seats. The Signature trim heads directly for luxury, with Nappa leather, genuine wood trim, front and rear parking alerts, a birds-eye 360-degree view of the exterior of the vehicle, and integrated navigation. Mazda does not offer an off-road capable CX-5.
