Although a lot of people choose a pickup for the tremendous amount of power they offer, particularly for hauling lumber, sheets of drywall, and other building materials across town, there are other drivers that look for a truck that is fun to drive. Even if you want a truck for play, rather than work, you can still enjoy all the muscle it has to offer, which can be particularly useful for going off-road. Not every truck is designed with the trail in mind, so if that is your goal, then you want to choose the best model available. With that in mind, you should consider your options, such as the 2021 Ram TRX vs 2020 Ford Raptor, to see which is right for you.
For years, the Ford Raptor has been the go-to choice for an off-road pickup truck, but now there is a new star available, one that leaves the Raptor in its proverbial dust. The all-new 2021 Ram TRX is a full-size, half-ton pickup designed to be a great truck for getting around town, but it really lives for the trail. It has an incredibly powerful engine that delivers over 700 hp and more than 600 lb-ft of torque, while the Ford Raptor can only manage 450 hp and just over 500 lb-ft of torque. In terms of muscle, the Raptor is not even close, and the all-new TRX has the power to let you really conquer the trail.
With a high-performance exhaust and TorqueFlite automatic transmission, the Ram TRX can go from 0 to 60 in 4.5 seconds, while also providing you with 18-inch beadlock-capable wheels and 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler all-terrain tires; the Ford Raptor shows up with 17-inch wheels. And while the Off-Road FOX racing Shox on the Raptor are a fine choice, the 2021 Ram TRX blows them away with Bilstein Black Hawk e2 shocks and much more. In all, the Ram TRX is the superior off-roading beast, and in the complete comparison, this will only become more evident.
When looking at any kind of truck, power and performance are important, since you want an engine that makes your pickup fun to drive and can handle whatever you need to throw at it. This is even more vital when you consider something like an off-road truck; the last thing you want is to get a model that does not have the power you need to handle the trail. This can lead to you getting stuck somewhere extremely unfortunate, so the engine is very important.
Although the 2020 Ford Raptor has a decent engine, it definitely falls short of the kind of power the Ram TRX can deliver. The Raptor has a High-Output 3.5L V6 EcoBoost engine that offers up to 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. When compared to a lot of other full-size trucks out there, this is a fine engine and delivers some impressive power, which you would expect from a model of the Ford F-150. But as soon as you look at what the Ram TRX has to offer, it becomes quite unimpressive.
That is because the 2021 Ram TRX is designed as a high-performance off-road option that puts an astounding amount of power at your disposal. The TRX is powered by a monstrous Supercharged 6.2L HEMI V8 engine that delivers 702 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque. This is absolutely incredible power from a non-heavy-duty pickup and truly blows away what the Ford Raptor has to offer. Thanks to this incredible engine and its responsive automatic transmission, the TRX can go from 0 to 60 in just 4.5 seconds.
In terms of towing and payload, both of these models come in a bit behind the standard Ram 1500 and Ford F-150 due to their off-road design, but they are still impressive. The Ford Raptor has a maximum towing of up to 8,000 lbs and 1,200 lbs of maximum payload. With the 2021 Ram TRX, however, you get up to 8,100 lbs. of maximum towing and 1,310 lbs of payload, which gives you a bit more muscle than the Ford offers. In all, the TRX has a more powerful engine, leading being the stronger truck.
Both the 2021 Ram TRX and the Ford Raptor are trucks designed with a clear off-road focus, so you would expect them to deliver excellent off-road features, which they do. While they both have some excellent overall performance on the trail, the TRX certainly pulls ahead with more to offer. The Ford Raptor is fine, but compared to the incredible technology in the all-new Ram TRX, it definitely looks its age.
For example, the Ford Raptor comes with 4WD, as you would expect, as well as an independent front suspension, electronic-locking rear differential, and off-road FOX Racing Shox. It has Trail Control and a long-travel suspension, plus a terrain management system with six selectable drive modes. It also has a dual exhaust system, 17-inch wheels with 17-inch beadlock capable wheels available, and skid plates for the front area and engine.
These are all good features that certainly surpass a lot of other standard pickups out there, but they simply cannot compete with what the 2021 Ram TRX has to offer. With the TRX, you get an incredibly powerful engine along with all-new Bilstein Black Hawk e2 shocks that are only found on the TRX and ensure you remain in control no matter how rough the terrain gets. You get eight different drive modes with the Ram TRX, allowing you to more efficiently and precisely adjust your truck’s settings to your road conditions or driving needs.
Plus, the TRX has nearly 12 inches of ground clearance, with 13 inches of front suspension travel and 14 inches of rear suspension travel. You get a high-performance exhaust with the TRX and a performance-proven TorqueFlite automatic transmission that is incredibly responsive to the road. The available 18-inch beadlock capable wheels on the TRX are larger than those found on the Raptor, while still giving you fantastic off-road functionality, and they come with 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler all-terrain tires. All of this adds up to an amazing off-road experience that no other pickup on or off the road can compete with.
Whether you are planning on going off-road or just looking to drive around town, it is important to choose a truck that surrounds you with luxury and sophistication. Although the Ford Raptor, and the F-150 in general, has some good options, Ram has recently surpassed every other manufacturer out there in terms of amazing luxury features. The 2021 TRX, with its powerful engine and unsurpassed off-road performance, is no exception.
Looking at the 2020 Ford Raptor, you can see it comes with a 4-inch driver information display, a standard dome light, and the typical gauges and meters you would expect – though an 8-inch driver productivity screen is an available option. It has a leather-wrapped sport-style steering wheel with paddle shifters, a number of unique interior accents, and manual air conditioning. It comes with a standard sound system, though a 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system is available, and features like push-button start and a heated steering wheel are optional.
With the 2021 Ram TRX, you get some truly amazing standard and available interior features that really surround you with luxury. For example, the TRX features a vertical 12-inch infotainment display standard on every model, with an available head-up display that allows you to keep track of driver information without ever taking your eyes off the road.
You also get an exclusive flat-bottom steering wheel in the Ram TRX, featuring aluminum shift paddles to remind you that you are in a performance-focused off-road pickup. The available 19-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system and a number of other amazing optional features take the interior of the TRX even further and leave every other truck behind.
