The great thing about the Jeep Wrangler is that no matter which version of it you choose, you get a fantastic off-road SUV. That being said, there are still different degrees of off-road performance available, so the model you choose at your Southern California Wrangler dealer will have an impact on the kinds of trails you can dominate. For one thing, there are numerous trims available for the Jeep Wrangler, and some of them start with more advanced features than others. In addition to that, you can also pick from a number of available packages or groups with more options to take your Wrangler to the next level.

Today, we are going to take a look at the Jeep Wrangler to see how you can build the ultimate off-road machine. We’ll go by each trim specifically to see what it starts with and what you might want to add in order to take your trail experience to the next level. Keep in mind that we’re not going to look at safety features, comfort options, or other things that don’t really come up too much when you go off-road. We’re only worried about the trail today.

Wrangler Sport

The starting trim for the Jeep Wrangler is the Sport, so we’ll start here too. This model comes with a 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine with a 6-speed manual transmission, the Command-Trac part-time 4×4 system, skid plates, and 17-inch wheels. It’s a fine off-road machine, to begin with, but there are a number of options available that you can choose to optimize it.

For starters, you can pick an available 2.0L Turbo I-4 engine for more power or a version of the V6 engine that’s a mild hybrid. There’s also an available Trac-Lok limited-slip differential for improved off-road performance, as well as an engine block heater that’s a good idea if you like to hit a lot of trails up in the mountains in cold climates. The available Trailer-Tow and Heavy-Duty Electric Group is ideal if you have a trailer or camper that you want to take with you to trailheads and similar locations.

Wrangler Sahara

Next up is the Jeep Wrangler Sahara, which builds on the features of the Sport by featuring the same engine, 4×4 system, and skid plates. The Sahara features 18-inch wheels with 18-inch Bridgestone all-season tires for boosted performance and traction. Perhaps most importantly, however, the Sahara has a number of options that can take its off-road performance even further, including available features you can’t get on the Sport.

In addition to a mild-hybrid version of the standard engine and a 2.0L Turbo I-4 engine with a mild hybrid system, the Sahara also has a 3.0L diesel V6 engine available if you prefer that kind of performance. There is an integrated off-road camera available for improved visibility while you’re on the trail, as well as Jeep’s Selec-Trac full-time 4WD system that improves upon the standard 4×4 technology. The same Trailer-Tow and Heavy-Duty Electric Group is available for the Sahara, which is a great choice if you want improved towing capacity, as is an LED Lighting Group that includes LED fog lamps, headlamps, and tail lamps to help illuminate the trail.

Wrangler Rubicon

Although not the highest trim for the Wrangler, the Rubicon is definitely one of the best off-road SUVs on the market, especially with the available options it has. For starters, however, you get the impressive 3.6L V6 engine, with an improved Rock-Trac 4×4 system, plus the Rubicon features Dana 44 heavy-duty axles with Tru-Lok front and rear locking differentials. You also get a performance suspension system designed for the trail, with high-clearance front fender flares, a sway bar disconnect, and automatic halogen headlamps and fog lamps. The Rubicon features 17-inch wheels with 33-inch off-road tires for boosted clearance and excellent traction.

Available features can really make the Rubicon an off-road powerhouse, starting with the same great engines available on the Sahara, so you can choose the kind of performance you want. The integrated off-road camera is available on the Rubicon trim, along with an 8-speed automatic transmission if you prefer that over the standard 6-speed manual. You can get the Trailer-Tow and Heavy-Duty Electric Group on the Rubicon for improved towing, the LED Lighting Group, and an available Steel-Bumper Group that includes a winch-capable front steel bumper with integrated fog lamps that can make you a hero to anyone who gets stuck on the trail.

Wrangler High Altitude

In many ways, the High Altitude is the pinnacle of what the Jeep Wrangler has to offer in terms of luxury and technology (though there’s an all-new option that you could argue surpasses it). The High Altitude comes with a 3.6L V6 engine and an 8-speed automatic transmission, with antilock 4-wheel FNC disc brakes, a sports suspension, and Command-Trac 4×4 system. It features Dana-wide heavy-duty front and rear axles with skid plates and 20-inch wheels wrapped in all-season tires. The LED Lighting Group comes standard on the High Altitude to ensure excellent illumination on the trail.

A 2.0L engine is available, either as a standard version or hybrid, as is the 3.0L diesel V6 engine if you prefer that. You can get the integrated off-road camera, as well as the Selec-Trac full-time 4WD system if you want to boost your off-road performance. A Trak-Lok limited-slip differential is also available to make the High Altitude not only incredibly luxurious and comfortable but to also make it a great ride on the trail.

Wrangler Rubicon 392

Despite its impressive performance, Wrangler fans have spent many years asking for something even more powerful, and with the Rubicon 392, Jeep has finally answered. The Rubicon 392 features a 6.4L HEMI V8 engine that delivers 470 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque, making it the most powerful Wrangler ever. It can go from 0 to 60 in 4.5 seconds and run the quarter-mile in just 13 seconds – yet it’s also an amazing off-road beast.

The Rubicon 392 features an electronic sway bar disconnect for incredible articulation up front, letting it tackle pretty much anything the trail throws at you. It has FOX aluminum-bodied 2-inch shocks for enhanced performance, with 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels wrapped in 33-inch mud-terrain tires, and quad tailpipes for the best performance possible. Combine all of that with a 2-inch factory lift and a new hydro-guide air induction system that gives it up to 32.5 inches of water fording, and you have the most powerful off-road SUV Jeep has ever made.
