Choosing Between the Wrangler and the Gladiator

Have you been browsing Jeep dealers in southern California and can’t seem to pick between the Wrangler and the Gladiator? In addition to that, it can tow a bit more than a Wrangler can. However, the Wrangler is much better to take off-road. While the Gladiator does well when it’s off the blacktop, the Wrangler is also a force to be reckoned with on the trails. Overall, these models are both great; they’re just designed for slightly different audiences.

The 2021 Jeep Wrangler

Let’s start by looking at each model’s strong points. The 2021 Jeep Wrangler is, of course, the top new model for off-roaders. This is especially true when you pick the Rubicon trim, which includes several standard off-roading features. For example, the Wrangler Rubicon trim comes with extra skid plates, shock absorbers to make even the bumpiest rides smoother, and both front and rear locking differentials, which increases torque and causes your wheels to stay at the same speed. This is super handy when you’re on rough, rocky terrain.

Overall, though, the Wrangler is great for off-roading, no matter which trim you choose. These models can push through up to 30 inches of water, and they have a 44-degree approach angle and a 10.9-inch ground clearance. Before we continue on, it’s important to note that your approach angle ensures that you can drive ramped up without getting blocked by your bumper. To put this into perspective, the Wrangler has a higher approach angle than any other model in its class.

Further, ground clearance indicates how much space you have between the ground and the Wrangler’s underbody. Basically, this tells you how tall of a log you can cross without having any issues. In addition to getting over 10 inches of ground clearance, the Rubicon and Willy’s trims have strong skid plates that also help prevent underbody damage.

Now let’s look at towing capacities on the 2021 Wrangler. At its best, the Wrangler can tow up to 3,500 pounds. This is with proper trailering equipment and engine configuration. While it can tow enough to get friends unstuck on trails, it’s not designed for heavy-duty towing. But if you’re an off-roader with no need for a high towing capacity, then it sounds like the Wrangler is your best option here.

The 2021 Jeep Gladiator

Now for the Jeep truck option. The 2021 Jeep Gladiator is a powerful vessel, beating the Wrangler when it comes to towing capacities. In fact, the Gladiator can tow up to 7,650 pounds, which is 4,150 pounds more than the Wrangler. Oddly enough, the lower level Gladiator trims are needed for this max towing capacity. But this is only when you add on the Max Trailering Package. This includes all-terrain tires, engine cooling, a class IV receiver hitch, and other handy trailering features.

While the Gladiator is heavier on its feet, it does keep up with several of the Wrangler specs. For example, it has an approach angle of 43.6 degrees, which is almost the same as the Wrangler’s 44-degree angle. Plus, it can handle up to 30 inches of water, and it has an even higher ground clearance than the Wrangler, landing it at 11.1 inches. This model is built to be much stronger than the Wrangler, and like any other truck model, it’s designed with towing in mind. Plus, it has a traditional truck bed for storing a payload of up to 1,700 pounds, perfect for hauling other off-road equipment with ease.

So, Which Model Is for Me?

The truth is that no matter how much each model keeps up with the other in certain aspects, the Wrangler will always be the better off-roader, and the Gladiator the better tow machine. We can’t escape the fact that the Wrangler is much lighter. This both makes it less towing capable and more off-road capable. While on the flip side, the Gladiator’s weight and strength make it better at towing but not as great at heading off-road. When you head out on the trails, it’s always better to have something light and flexible rather than heavy and stiff.

The answer here is simple. If you like to head off-road, then the Wrangler is for you. If you need towing power while also maintaining decent off-roading capabilities, then the Gladiator is your model! Neither is better or worse than the other. It’s all about personal interest here.

What Do These Two Models Share?

First off, both models include a Rubicon trim. This means that extra serious off-roaders have the Rubicon option available no matter which model they choose. Plus, you’ll get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth hands-free connectivity, 4-wheel LO and HI options, and a standard Uconnect infotainment screen. These models also share an almost identical design, minus the Gladiator’s whole truck rendition. From the front, it’s difficult to tell the two models apart. On the whole, these models do share many commonalities.

Does the Gladiator Have a Removable Top Like the Wrangler?

Just like its close Wrangler cousin, the Jeep Gladiator does include removable top options. The same goes for its doors and front windshield! Jeep Gladiator top options include soft tops and then hardtops in both black or body-colored options. However, unlike with the Wrangler, it is not possible to get the one-touch power top on the Gladiator.

Where Can I Take My Wrangler or Gladiator In Southern California?

Regardless of which model you choose, both are very off-road capable. Just because the Wrangler is a bit better for trailing than the Gladiator does not mean you can’t take the Gladiator out on the trails too. But the real question here is, where can you go trailing in southern California? Here are a few cool spots for you to check out!

First off, you’ll want to stop by a place called Little Holcomb. This is a short trail that is designed for newer off-roaders. Basically, it includes miniature versions of areas included in harder, local trails. If you’re into more of a sight-seeing type of trail, check out the Chuckwalla Mountains Red Canyon Trail. This dusty, desert trail leads to a beautiful canyon wall that’s fun to explore on foot. As a result, this is a great destination trail.

There’s also a great camping trail called The Wheeler Trail or Wheeler Road that’s perfect if you’ve got an RV. Similarly, folks who tent camp in their Jeeps will love setting up camp on this road during the night and riding during the day. This trail travels by beautiful old growths of redwoods and ends at a remote beach location.
