Jeep introduced the Compass in 2007. Now in its second generation since 2017, the Jeep Compass provides a combination of exceptional performance, solid fuel economy, a roomy and comfortable interior, and the latest technological features to make it an excellent choice. This is especially so if you plan to use your Compass as a way to get you to work. It also makes an outstanding first car for new drivers, with the safety features and maneuverability that you will need to enjoy driving.

What’s New for 2022?

Jeep has made a number of changes to refresh the Compass for the 2022 model year. On the outside, the front end has been updated to give a look that is more in line with the larger Jeep Grand Cherokee. This includes a more aggressive grille and an improved aerodynamic profile. The interior includes a new tablet-style touchscreen for the Uconnect 5 infotainment system and a more ergonomic dashboard style. The suspension system and steering have been upgraded to give a more supple ride, with improved cornering and handling.

The other big news for the 2022 Compass is a new Latitude Lux trim level. This fits in between Latitude and Limited trims, adding more features at an affordable price. It features standard 4×4, leather seats, and the larger of the two touchscreens available for the Uconnect 5 system. In all, Jeep offers seven different trim levels on the 2022 Compass. This allows you to choose the model with the features that will best suit your lifestyle while being able to remain inside your vehicle budget.

Trims and Features

The 2022 Jeep Compass is one of the most affordable models in the Jeep lineup, but it doesn’t lack features. The base Compass Sport trim includes the standard Advanced Safety Group and the Uconnect 5 system on an 8.4-inch touchscreen. The Latitude follows with added interior and exterior features. Both of these also come standard with front-wheel drive but have 4×4 available. The all-new Latitude Lux features a standard 4×4 drivetrain, as do all the higher trims on the Compass.

Each of the four top trims has different features to recommend them. The Limited ramps up luxury with leather seats, a larger Uconnect 5 touchscreen, adaptive cruise control, and a two-tone paint job with a gloss black roof. The Trailhawk is designed for adventure with standard off-road suspension, red tow hooks, and Trail Rated capability. The Compass (RED) is flaming hot with a sporty appeal. Finally, the top-trim High Altitude pulls out all the stops with a built-in navigation system, larger 19-inch wheels, a dual-pane sunroof, and premium LED projector headlights.

Power and Performance

Each 2022 Jeep Compass features a standard 2.4-liter Tigershark I-4 gas engine. This engine features automatic stop-start to reduce fuel consumption by turning off the engine when you come to a full stop and automatically restarting it when you take your foot off the brake. The Tigershark engine uses sequential multiport fuel injection to deliver 177 hp and 172 lb-ft of torque. Despite its small size, this engine is quite powerful, allowing the Compass to be able to tow up to 2,000 lbs.

In an interesting twist, the engineers at Jeep have given the 2022 Compass two different transmissions. All Compass models with front-wheel drive feature a six-speed automatic transmission, while models 4×4 are equipped with a nine-speed automatic transmission. As a result, fuel efficiency is fairly comparable. Both drivetrains provide 22 MPG in the city and 25 MPG combined. However, choosing a front-wheel drive Compass will give you 31 MPG on the highway, one MPG better than if you choose a 4×4 model.

Uconnect 5 Keeps You Connected

The Uconnect 5 technology is sure to be one of your favorite features on the 2022 Jeep Compass. This infotainment system features a standard 8.4-inch touchscreen on the Sport and Latitude trims, with a 10.1-inch touchscreen on the Latitude Lux, Limited, Trailhawk, (RED), and High Altitude trims. This makes it one of the largest available touchscreens on a model in the subcompact segment.

This system helps you stay connected by providing Apple CarPlay support and Android Auto compatibility. This allows it to work with whichever smartphone you and your passengers use. Each trim features a six-speaker audio system, except for the High Altitude, which comes equipped with a nine-speaker Alpine premium audio system. Alpine is one of the leaders in audio equipment, and this comes in addition to the Compass High Altitude’s trim-exclusive navigation system.

Safety Comes Standard

Jeep has focused on making the 2022 Compass one of the safest models in its segment. This is shown by the standard Advanced Safety Group of driver assistance features. As a result, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) named the 2022 Jeep Compass a Top Safety Pick. Each year, the IIHS conducts safety tests including crash tests on most passenger cars and releases its findings to the public. The Top Safety Pick designation is one of the highest safety ratings a vehicle can receive.

The 2022 Compass features Forward Collision Warning with Active Braking. This will sound an alarm if you are approaching the vehicle in front of you with too much speed. If the system determines that a crash is imminent, it will engage the brakes to either avoid the collision or minimize its impact. Pedestrian and Cyclist Emergency Detection works in a similar fashion but is designed to detect more vulnerable road users so you can avoid colliding with them.

One of the biggest causes of highway accidents is when drivers drift out of their lane. The Active Lane Management system will alert you if you drift and then use small steering adjustments to get you back on the straight and narrow. Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Path Detection helps when you make intentional lane changes. If you signal to change lanes, this feature will alert you if there is a vehicle that you cannot see in your path. Most other brands make you pay a premium for blind spot detection, but Jeep has made it standard on the 2022 Compass.

All trims of the 2022 Compass also sport a ParkView Rear Back-Up camera. This will help you safely back out of parking spots. In addition, the Rear Cross Path Detection system will alert you if a pedestrian or another vehicle is about to cross behind your Compass when you are in reverse.
