The Jeep Wrangler: Building the Ultimate Adventure Vehicle

Jeep is synonymous with off-roading. When you want to tear across the open trail, power through dirt, or crawl up a rocky hill, the Jeep Wrangler can get you there. A used Jeep Wrangler is the perfect rough-and-tumble companion for any adventure in the wild. However, choosing a model—and choosing between a 2-door and a 4-door used Wrangler—can leave you scratching your head.

Ever since the first Wrangler premiered in 1987, these 4×4 off-roaders have become the poster child for the Jeep brand. In fact, when you think of Jeep, a Wrangler may be the first thing that comes to mind. Its boxy shape, signature slotted grille, and upright cabin are practically trademarked. However, not all Wranglers are created equal, and the 2-door and 4-door (also known as the “Unlimited”) offer very different driving experiences.

There’s a reason that this has been one of the most popular 4×4 off-roaders in automotive history, but choosing the perfect model year and configuration ensures you get everything you need in a vehicle. How much cabin space do you require? How much capability and stability are needed to endure your off-roading style? At Orange Coast Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram Fiat, we know America’s favorite adventure vehicle is the Wrangler. But we can’t necessarily say whether a 4-door or 2-door model is better. It all comes down to your driving needs.

Loading Up a Wrangler (with Luggage)

There are more to 2-door and 4-door Wranglers than the number of entry points. You’d be correct in assuming that a 4-door Jeep Wrangler has a larger cabin, no matter the model year. However, there are other distinct differences that will affect your experience with this 4×4.

Take cargo capacity, for instance. If you plan on hitting the open road in a Jeep Wrangler, you need space to pile in cargo and load up all your luggage, fishing equipment, camping necessities, etc. If you want extra cargo room, a used 4-door model is for you.

For example, a 2020 4-door Wrangler can hold up to 72.4 cubic feet of cargo. That’s ample space to supply your open-road experience. However, a similar 2-door model can carry up to 31.7 cubic feet of cargo. That’s certainly not small—competing SUVs have a similar cargo capacity—but a 4-door is more generous overall.

Did you also know that Wranglers can tow? You can easily pull a trailer and more with a used Jeep Wrangler. However, towing varies based on size. A 2-door Jeep Wrangler can tow up to 2,000 pounds, which is nothing to shrug at. However, a 4-door model can tow an impressive 3,500 pounds—a figure that competes with small pickup trucks!

Overall, both a 2-door and a 4-door will get you where you need to go. However, the larger model gives you extra capability to load up cargo and even tow tremendous weight. A 4-door Wrangler is a must for those who enjoy special outdoor activities or long road trips. If you’re price-conscious, though, a 2-door model can save you thousands without sacrificing utility.

Loading Up a Wrangler (with Passengers)

The passenger experience is more varied between 2-door and 4-door models. That’s because a 2-door model seats up to 4 passengers, depending on the model year. Meanwhile, a 4-door Wrangler usually seats up to 5—as you’d expect of 4×4 and SUV models of this size.

The major difference in transporting passengers lies in the entry points. In order to access the back row of seats in a 2-door, passengers must fold down the front passenger seat, then climb on back. In a 4-door model, the back row of seats has its own set of doors. Passengers can enter and exit on each side of the cabin.

While the Wrangler is designed for adventure, it’s also designed to be a reliable, everyday commuter car. So, it provides comfort and safety features that accommodate additional passengers. These include rear storage compartments and ergonomic seating. However, ease of access and extra legroom in the 4-door models make them more appropriate for families. The 4-door Wrangler is ideal for strapping in three or four adults for an off-road adventure.

Any Driving Differences?

Onto the good stuff. We’re talking about how the 2-door and 4-door Jeep Wrangler perform in the most grueling off-road conditions. Every Wrangler comes with either part-time or full-time 4×4, delivering power to every wheel. In the latter, 4×4 automatically activates when necessary to improve traction and decrease slipping, while the former must be engaged manually. High torque ratings ensure the wheels have enough power to trudge through mud, sand, and other difficult conditions.

When you shop for a used Wrangler, you might find that the 4-door Wranglers Unlimited actually has superior off-road equipment. That’s because some trims are locked to the 4-door, including the powerful Rubicon 392 and plug-in hybrid Wrangler 4xe. However, most trims are available for both Wrangler cabin styles and are stocked to the brim with off-road equipment.

Keep an eye out for outstanding features like anti-roll bar disconnects, front and rear locking differentials, and available off-road driving modes. Many used Wranglers feature upgraded off-road tires and other adventure-ready modifications for improved performance. And of course, the Wrangler comes standard with removable doors and roof, alongside a fold-down windshield. Take in Mother Nature’s finest with as little as possible blocking your view.

Because you can’t spend all your time out in the woods, you also need a model that suits your on-road demands. Thankfully, with only a few exceptions, the Wrangler offers plenty of powertrain options. In the 2018 models, for example, you get as much as 285 horsepower from the standard 3.6-liter V6 engine. Some models offer a turbocharged 4-cylinder, while a V6 diesel engine is available for others.

Choose a model with 6-speed manual transmission for ultimate driver engagement or upgrade to a smooth-shifting 8-speed automatic. Either way, the Wrangler is quick to accelerate and has plenty of low-end power for enjoyable driving. Braking is smooth, and highway fuel economy ratings are competitive. Exact figures vary by model year and trim, so be sure to check the specs on any used Wrangler you are interested in.

A Word About Safety and Infotainment

One way that 2-door and 4-door Wranglers don’t differ is in their technology. Tech features tend to vary based on model year and trim package rather than cabin configuration. For example, a 2018 model will always come with a touchscreen infotainment system. However, a model outfitted with the Technology Package will feature a larger display. Should you find a Wrangler with the Infotainment System Group, you’ll enjoy upgrades like real-time navigation.

If you’re interested in optimal on-road safety, look for a model equipped with driver assistance features. As with infotainment, these features are available on 2-door and 4-door Wranglers. To enjoy the highest safety ratings, shop for a used Wrangler fitted with blind-spot monitoring, rear-cross traffic alert, and other active safety tech.
