Why a CPO?

If you’re in the market for a new vehicle, you might be wondering what’s the difference if you buy from a used dealer or a certified pre-owned dealer? Isn’t a used car just a used car? Well, yes and no. If you’re in the market for a used vehicle, one car isn’t always like another. While a used vehicle is simply that, a used vehicle, a certified pre-owned (CPO) vehicle is usually lightly used, been looked at by a certified specialist, is only a few years old, and is backed by the original factory warranty. So when you buy certified pre-owned, not only are you getting a great vehicle without the hefty price tag of a new vehicle, but you’re getting the guarantee that it’s roadworthy.
The question almost becomes, why wouldn’t you buy a CPO? Is one brand better than the other? When it comes to some of the most popular makes on the market like Jeep, Dodge, Ram, or Chrysler are you getting your money’s worth by investing in a CPO rather than buying new or lease? If you’re still left with some questions, then read on because at Orange Coast, we make it our priority to answer questions and inform the buyer so they can make the best possible choice for them when it comes to purchasing a new, used, or CPO vehicle.

The CPO Warranties
Luckily some of the biggest, best brands, such as Jeep, Dodge, Ram, and Chrysler, come under a one umbrella CPO warranty. This is great news for the buyer because that means each vehicle shares the same great CPO standards, and it’s easier than ever to make a Certified Pre-Owned vehicle yours.
In order for a used Jeep, Dodge, Ram, or Chrysler to qualify as a CPO, it has to meet some pretty strict guidelines. The vehicle in question undergoes a rigorous 125-point inspection. This includes having all safety recalls updated as well. The vehicle must be five years old or newer and carry less than 75,000 miles on it. The title must be clean, meaning the vehicle hasn’t been in an accident. All CPOs come with a CarFax report, original literature (warranty info and owners manuals), plus the original keys.
And that’s just getting started. Look into the mechanical inspection, and the list gets longer. Every worry a buyer might have when buying a used car is taken care of during the inspection process, from under the hood to how the vehicle handles on the road. When you buy a CPO, it’s like you’re practically getting a new vehicle. And don’t let the title of ‘pre-owned’ throw you: some of the vehicles that qualify are just floor models or demo models, they’ve barely been driven and are typically in like-new condition. So when you go with a CPO, you get all the benefits of a brand new car without the brand new car cost.
So once a vehicle passes the 125-point inspection, it’s ready to go. Now you’re ready to move on to the warranties themselves. Chrysler offers 2 options when it comes to CPO warranties, plus an option to upgrade, so you get the right fit for you.
The first warranty Chryster offers for their CPO-backed vehicles is the 7-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty. With this warranty, repairs to the vehicle are covered on the majority of a vehicle’s powertrain components. A vehicle’s powertrain can often include some expensive repair parts, including the transmission, engine, and driveline. That piece of the warranty is enough to give most car owners peace of mind. It’s fair to note that there is a deductible per visit, which you’ll find standard on most warranties.
So how long does this warranty last? The 7-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty has you covered either for seven years from the date of the original sale (so when the vehicle was first sold as a new vehicle) or when you reach 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. This warranty is great because it does last for quite a long time and can cover some potentially expensive costs if something were to go wrong with your CPO vehicle. However, the deductible amount varies, and you will have to talk to your dealer to see what the specific amount is. But a deductible might be worth it if you have a high-cost repair like an engine or transmission, which can often run into thousands of dollars.
The second choice when it comes to warranties is the bumper-to-bumper 3-month/3,000 mile maximum care warranty. Meaning it’s good for 3 months or 3,000 miles, whichever comes first. This warranty is noticeably shorter than the 7-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty. As the name suggests, they cover maximum care, including over 5,000 different components ranging from the vehicle’s electrical system to under the hood to its suspension and brakes. This warranty also comes with a deductible per visit, so ask your dealer for the specific amount.
It’s also worth noting that all warranties come with free 24-hour towing and roadside assistance, giving drivers extra peace of mind. But Chrysler does offer the option to upgrade your warranty, whether it’s the limited powertrain warranty or the maximum care. There are three upgrades the driver can choose from to complement their existing coverage. The three plans range from Powertrain Care, Added Plus Care, and Maximum Care. All three options are offered exclusively by the FCA US, so customers can be sure their plans are doubly good, with no doubts. Each upgraded option begins on the date of the plan purchase. More information about the per visit deductible can be given to you by your local Jeep, Dodge, Ram, or Chrysler CPO dealer.
