  • Overview

A red 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Altitude is angled left.

To say that the Grand Cherokee made a grand debut in 1992 is an understatement. Quite literally, the Grand Cherokee shattered the glass ceiling of its segment as it drove up the steps and through the glass window of Detroit’s Cobo Hall. This is the birthright of the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee WL, the newest edition of the most awarded and acclaimed SUV ever made.

Jeep continues to raise the bar when it comes to capable SUVs. We see this tradition continue through the fifth generation of the Grand Cherokee (known as the WL generation) that not only builds on the SUV’s rich legacy but extends it even further, shattering the standards of the industry even after 30 years. We see this in the all-new Grand Cherokee 4xe that embodies Jeep’s vision of a future of ā€œZero Emission Freedom.ā€ That future means the same legendary capability of the Jeep brand in the first-ever plug-in hybrid Grand Cherokee. But the SUV’s ā€œgrandnessā€ doesn’t stop there.

As the most acclaimed SUV in history, the Grand Cherokee––the first of the WL generation––easily lives up to its reputation and offers more powertrains, more legendary capability, more technology, more versatility, and more innovative features than ever before. We see this firsthand in models like the new Grand Cherokee Trailhawk which elevates the SUV’s capability with its prowess both on and off the road. When you combine the Trailhawk with the 4xe, you get an even better glimpse of the future of Jeep’s lineup and the accuracy of what it means to be ā€œtrail rated, nature approved.ā€ It’s safe to say that the WL generation of the Grand Cherokee is off to an impressive start.

  • Power

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee WL sees an extension of its powertrain lineup thanks to the all-new plug-in hybrid powertrain. Designated the 4xe and available on the Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, Summit, and Summit Reserve, the 4xe is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, dual electric motors, and a 400-volt battery pack to deliver 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque with a maximum towing capability of 6,000 pounds. The hybrid powertrain is remarkable because it extends the Grand Cherokee’s capability and proves that a hybrid can easily hold its own on the trail with a 24-mile all-electric range and an impressive 57 MPGe efficiency.

    V6 and V8 Engine Options

Beyond the hybrid powertrain, Jeep relies on its award-winning engines to meet the demands of Grand Cherokee drivers. The 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine, which is a seven-time winner of the Wards 10 Best Engines and Propulsion Systems award, is standard across the lineup and features engine start-stop technology that maximizes efficiency. Fortunately, this efficiency doesn’t come at the cost of power or capability, with the Pentastar delivering 293 horses and 260 lb-ft of torque.

For those looking for more power, Jeep delivers with the award-winning 5.7-liter V8 engine with variable valve timing and fuel-saver technology that effortlessly balances power and capability. Available on the Overland, Trailhawk, Summit, and Summit Reserve, the 5.7-liter churns out 357 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque for jaw-dropping responsiveness and acceleration whether you’re in town, cruising the highway, or navigating a new trail. The 5.7-liter is also responsible for the Grand Cherokee’s best-in-class towing capacity of 7,200 pounds, making the SUV even more versatile for those who need to tow heavy loads.

    Smooth and Efficient

The engines are all mated to Jeep’s TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission, which adds to the Grand Cherokee’s efficiency and capability. The TorqueFlite transmission is known for its smooth gear changes, which is vital when you’re navigating between two-wheel and four-wheel drive. It’s also incredibly efficient because it keeps the engine’s rpms at the appropriate range for the terrain and the task at hand, which means less demand on the engine and less fuel consumption.

  • Off-Road Capability

It’s impossible to discuss the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee WL without highlighting its off-road capability. This capability reaches its peak in the upgraded Grand Cherokee Trailhawk that rolls off the production line ready for the trail. So, what makes the Trailhawk the most capable in the fleet?

The Grand Cherokee Trailhawk comes standard with 18-inch wheels and beefy all-terrain tires that are designed to meet the demands of the road long after the pavement ends. When the trail begins, you don’t have to think twice about the Trailhawk’s ability since it’s now equipped with a class-exclusive sway-bar disconnect that improves its maneuverability, articulation, and traction on rough terrain. Its undercarriage is protected by high-strength skid plates, while the SUV’s iconic red tow hooks give you peace of mind knowing that you can pull yourself out of a dicey situation on the trail.

    Off-Roading Tools

The Trailhawk also comes standard with Selec-Speed Control that extends the legendary capability of Jeep’s awarded SUV. Selec-Speed Control acts like cruise control for the trail when you’re in 4LO and climbing or descending steep grades. In these situations, the system automatically applies the necessary brake pressure to maintain a safe speed for the Trailhawk. This allows you to focus on the road ahead without having to move constantly between the brake and accelerator pedals.

The Trailhawk also leads the segment when it comes to traction, ground clearance, maneuverability, and water fording capability. Thanks to the Quadra-Lift air suspension, the Trailhawk offers up to 11.3 inches of ground clearance for better approach, departure, and breakover angles when you’re navigating rough terrain. The 18-inch wheels add to this clearance and the Trailhawk’s class-leading water fording capability of up to 24 inches, which means more possibilities for adventure.

    Always Ready for Adventure

Beyond the Trailhawk, you’ll find plenty of capability throughout the Grand Cherokee lineup thanks to tools like the Selec-Terrain traction management system and Jeep’s legendary four-wheel-drive systems–Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II, and Quadra-Drive II. The Selec-Traction management system gives you more control over how the Grand Cherokee performs with modes like Auto, Sport, Rock, Snow, and Mud/Sand that tailor the SUV’s capability based on the terrain. The four-wheel-drive systems are all equipped with an active transfer case that constantly improves traction by sending torque to the wheels with the most grip, maximizing the Grand Cherokee’s ability to travel through mud, snow, sleet, ice, rain, and other harsh terrains.

  • Technology

The grey interior of a 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee shows the infotainment screen.

Jeep keeps its promise to deliver the most advanced Grand Cherokee ever built. The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee WL is laden with state-of-the-art technology, from safety and driver-assist tools to an intuitive infotainment system and an array of digital displays. The newest Grand Cherokee comes with over 110 advanced safety and security features that include standard tools like Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go, Active Lane Management, and Full-Speed Collision Warning with Active Braking and Pedestrian/Cyclist Detection. You can extend this suite of safety tools with enhanced technology like the all-new Night Vision Camera, Intersection Collision Assist, and a 360-degree surround-view camera.

    Designed for the Future

Aside from its impressive suite of safety and driver-assist tools, the Grand Cherokee keeps you and your passengers connected whether you’re in town or on the trail. The heart of this connectivity is in Jeep’s new Uconnect 5 infotainment system that is housed on a variety of digital displays, including a first-in-class front passenger display. Through the system, you can wirelessly sync your smartphone using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. You can also use simple voice commands to activate Amazon Alexa, which equips the Grand Cherokee with a virtual assistant that can stream your favorite music, respond to text messages, make calls, and more.

The Grand Cherokee’s suite of technology extends to available features like the full-color 10-inch Head-Up Display that puts vital information in a crisp display on the windshield in front of you. Fire TV is also a new option for the 2022 Grand Cherokee and gives your passengers the ability to stream videos, listen to music, watch their favorite series, and play games wherever the road leads. By connecting to the Uconnect 5 system, your passengers in the backseat will also have the ability to adjust the climate settings and see your estimated arrival time to your destination.
