The battle of the half-ton pickups is one that never ends. It's a hard-fought contest between some of the biggest brands in the industry, all vying for the top spot as the market's most prestigious full-size pickup. When it comes to the 2022 Ram 1500 vs 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500, we have a battle of power, performance, capacity, and capabilities all colliding in a big way. This includes the EcoDiesel versus the Duramax and the Hemi versus the EcoTec3, but which one is right for you? That's what we're here to determine.

The 2022 Ram 1500 is available across six trims, including the base Tradesman, the Big Horn, the Laramie, the Rebel, the Limited Longhorn, and the Limited. You can get the Ram 1500 in ten different monotone exterior colors and five different two-tone colors. This includes eye-catching options like Flame Red and Hydro Blue as well as plenty of more subdued colors.

The 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 is available in eight different trim formats. The trims start with the WT trim, followed by the Custom, the LT, the RST, the Custom Trail Boss, the LT Trail Boss, the LTZ, and the High Country. You can get the Silverado 1500 in many different exterior colors as well, including three new options for the 2022 model year: Dark Ash, Sand Dune, and Glacier Blue. Both of these trucks offer plenty of performance on top of their customization options, but which is better?

  • Performance

    Diverse Engine Options

In the 2022 Ram 1500 vs 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 comparison, the key aspect of their functionality falls to their powertrain capabilities. The Ram 1500 and Silverado 1500 have multiple options for both the fuel-conscious and the power-hungry. The 2022 Ram 1500 offers three different powertrain options, while the 2022 Silverado 1500 offers four different powertrain options. Of course, more isn't always better when the results are less effective, and that's one of the issues that the Silverado runs into compared to the 2022 Ram 1500.

The Silverado 1500 features a standard turbocharged 2.7-liter inline 4-cylinder, sporting 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. This is followed by the 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8, which outputs 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, while the top 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V8 outputs 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. The available 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel inline 6-cylinder offers the most low-end torque, with 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. All but the base engine are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The 4-cylinder is matched up with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The Ram 1500's powertrains start with a traditional 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 paired with eTorque technology to provide instantaneous torque right off the line. The Pentastar V6 manages 305 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque. The available 5.7-liter Hemi V8 manages 395 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque, while the eTorque version of the Hemi V8 gives you more instant torque to access. Finally, Ram offers a 3.0L Ecodiesel that provides a best-in-class 480 pound-feet of torque for incredible towing ability. All of the Ram's engines are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

    Drivetrain and Efficiency

Both the Ram and the Silverado come in two-wheel and four-wheel drive configurations. While the Silverado edges out the Ram in total horsepower, the Ram takes the lead in torque. The torque factor is also significantly pronounced with the eTorque technology that helps deliver more torque to the driveline without having to wait for the revs to spool. This means that with the Ram, you get better off-the-line towing performance, better off-the-line acceleration, and smoother propulsion.

In addition to this, the 2022 Ram leads the Silverado in top-end fuel economy, with the EcoDiesel topping out at 23 miles per gallon in the city and 33 miles per gallon on the highway. The 2022 Silverado's best fuel economy stats are 23 miles per gallon in the city and 31 miles per gallon on the highway. The base engines tell the same story, with Ram's rugged V6 providing 23 miles per gallon combined, while Chevy's new four-cylinder only makes 20 miles per gallon combined. Thus, the Ram clearly takes the edge in that category as well.

  • Capacity

    Built to Haul

There are multiple cab and bed configurations available for both the 2022 Ram 1500 and the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500. The Silverado 1500 is available in Regular Cab, Double Cab, and Crew Cab formats, as well as with a long bed, a short bed, and a regular bed. Select trims of the Silverado 1500 can seat up to six people across the two rows in a split-bench front and rear row seating arrangement setup.

The 2022 Ram 1500 can also seat up to six people across two rows, depending on the trim. You can also get the Ram 1500 in either Crew Cab or Quad Cab format with either a 6-foot, 4-inch bed or in the shorter 5-foot, 7-inch bed. Alternatively, you can go with the 2022 Ram 1500 Classic for the Regular Cab and 8-foot long bed box.

    Cabin Space

Ram trucks are built for comfort, and you will see this first-hand in the cab dimensions. For instance, the max front hip room of the Ram 1500 is 63.4 inches, and the max rear hip room is identical. The Ram's front shoulder room is 66 inches, and the rear shoulder room is 65.7 inches, totaling out to a max of 132 cubic feet of passenger volume.

The Silverado 1500's front hip room is only 61.2 inches, while the rear hip room is 60.2 inches. The max shoulder room available within the Silverado is 66 inches in the front and 65.2 inches in the rear. Simply put, the Ram 1500 offers more room and space to move around, even if only by inches. This definitely adds to the Ram's appeal for interior comfort and luxury space compared to the Silverado 1500.

  • Technology

    Comparing Comfort Features

A big part of the appeal within the half-ton market is the technology, whether it's the tech to help propel the performance or the tech necessary to increase the luxury elements. Technology is a centerpiece of every new full-size model year pick. In the 2022 Ram 1500 vs 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 matchup, the battle over technology is a hard-fought one, whether it be safety and security or performance and infotainment.

The Silverado 1500 has received a buffed-up infotainment suite to compete with the Ram 1500's offerings, receiving an available 13-inch display, which is slightly larger than the Ram 1500's available 12-inch HD touchscreen display suite. Both have available wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, along with 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot integration and SiriusXM Satellite Radio subscription services.

However, on the upper-end trims, the Ram takes the lead thanks to its 19-speaker premium surround-sound Harman Kardon audio suite. It's a huge step up from the available 7-speaker Bose premium speaker system found on the upper-end trims for the Silverado. The Ram 1500 also comes with available heated and ventilated seats, along with driver-seat memory and power driver and front passenger seating. While the Silverado offers power driver and front passenger seats with driver-seat memory, the heated and ventilated seat combination is sadly missing in many trucks because of the chip shortage.

    Work and Safety Features

While both trucks come with a number of passive and active driving aids, as well as features such as a multi-functional tailgate, Ram is simply built to offer more. The available 4-corner air-suspension technology that dynamically adjusts the ride height of the Ram for additional ground clearance or aerodynamics based on an in-cabin toggle button makes it a lot more advanced than what the 2022 Silverado 1500 has to offer by comparison. While leaf springs are a proven technology, they just don't compare to an adaptive air-ride suspension, and this is just one of the many innovations that the 2022 Ram 1500 has to offer.
