Now that’s some serious muscle to help you move what you need, while still being able to provide driving comfort and style.
Now, although the new Gladiator sounds impressive with its sleek design and impressive towing capacity, many might still be wondering about its off-road worthiness? Well, rest assured, it still keeps to its Jeep heritage by providing world-class off-road capabilities.
Regardless of which model you choose, you’ll be pleased to know all Jeep Gladiators include the same identical 3.6L V6 motor, coupled with their legendary four-wheel drive system.
As for the different Gladiator models, you’ll have no problem selecting one that suits your needs. Choose between the Sport, Sport S, and Overland models based on your luxury/creature comfort needs and preferences. However, if you need the Gladiator model that is the most rugged and most capable of tackling your hardest off-road adventures, check out the Gladiator Rubicon.
How Does It Stack-Up Against the Competition?
Now, if you’re in the market for a Jeep, you might be wondering how the Gladiator stacks-up against the competition, right? Well, if you’ve been looking around, you’re probably aware that the main competitors in this 4×4 mid-size truck segment are the Ford Ranger, Chevrolet Colorado, and the Toyota Tacoma.
Towing Capacity
Pretty steep competition, right? Well, remember what we said about the towing capacity? Here’s how the Jeep Gladiator compares by the numbers. Starting with the lowest, we have the Toyota Tacoma, which comes in at 6,800 towing pounds. Next, we have the Ford Ranger, which can tow up to 7,500 pounds. And lastly, the Chevrolet Colorado, which provides 7,000 pounds of towing capacity on it’s most powerful gas engine.
These numbers are for gas engines only, and with that said, no one else surpasses the 7,650 pounds that is available on the Gladiator.
Payload Capacity
But maybe the highest towing capacity doesn’t apply to you because you’re main hauling isn’t with a tow hitch, but simply things you throw into the back of the truck bed. Well, for that, we have to look at the payload capacity. And again, starting with the lowest, Toyota Tacoma has an available 1,440 pounds of payload capacity. From there, we jump up a bit to the Chevrolet Colorado at 1,578 pounds. And slightly more with the Ford Ranger at 1,650 pounds on the 4×4 model. However, the Gladiator, once again, surpasses all others by offering 1,700 pounds of payload capacity.
Braking Power
Well, as important as it is for a truck to haul serious weight, it is equally important for a truck to bring all of that weight to a complete stop and in a safe manner. For this, we’ll need to look at the differences in braking system sizes. Starting with the lowest is the Toyota Tacoma with 10.75 inches (front) and 10 inches (rear) brakes. Next is the Chevrolet Colorado with 12.2 inches / 12.75 inches. And it’s followed-up by the Ford Ranger with 12.24 inches / 12.2 inches. But as with hauling capacity, no one surpasses the Gladiator with 12.9-inch front and 13.6-inch brakes.

Interior Features
Well, maybe your focus isn’t on the truck capacity, but more on the interior for you and your passengers. Well, the Gladiator has you covered there, as well. With the Best-in-Class rearseat legroom, your passengers will be glad you considered them when choosing your truck. The numbers, starting with the lowest, show the Toyota Tacoma coming in with a tighter squeeze at 32.6 inches of rear legroom. Following this is the Ford Ranger with 34.5 inches and the Chevrolet Colorado with 35.8 inches of rearseat legroom. But nothing comes close to the class-leading 38.3 inches, offered by the Gladiator.
And if you’re concerns are with what’s available from the driver’s perspective, you will take pleasure in knowing that the Gladiator offers the largest infotainment touchscreen. Once again, Toyota Tacoma is the lowest with a 7-inch touchscreen. However, the Ford Ranger and Chevrolet Colorado are tied in this category with an 8-inch touchscreen offering. But again, the largest size goes to the Gladiator with 8.4-inches of touchscreen real estate.
But no matter where you’re sitting in the Gladiator, every person will be able to soak in the outdoors with Jeep’s signature removable doors, which is still specific to Jeep’s only. Couple this with Jeep’s signature removable top, and you have the only true open-air experience for any truck, in any segment. But to take it further for 2020, Jeep has also included a fold-down windshield for the Gladiator. As you might expect, there are no figures to compare against the Gladiator because, unfortunately, the competitors do not offer these open-air features on their trucks.
Different Gladiator Model Specifications
As mentioned earlier, regardless of which trim level you choose in the Gladiator line-up, the core ruggedness applies to each. And that is the standard 3.6L V6 engine with ESS and a standard four-wheel drive system.
The Sport and Sport S
We start with the Sport (base trim) and Sport S (mid-level trim) because these are the essentials-only models. Although they have slight differences in standard and optional luxury features, they are fairly the same, but we will highlight the main differences.
Unlike the higher-end Overland and Rubicon models, the Sport and Sport S come equipped with a less powerful, yet standard 180-amp alternator, but do have the option to choose the 240-amp alternator.
The interior standard seating material is also the same for both models, which happens to be regular cloth for the bucket seats and no option to upgrade to premium cloth or leather-trimmed bucket seats. However, all four models include an option to upgrade to Mopar signature black perforated or stitched leather bucket seats.
Power 1-touch down front windows are not available on the Sport, and there is no option to add it either.
LED ambient interior lighting is not available on either model, as well.
Premium audio comes by way of an Alpine sound system, but is not available on the Sport and optional on the Sport S.
The Sports includes standard 17-inch black steel wheels, but no optional non-steel upgrades. Whereas the Sport S does have standard 17-inch silver aluminum wheels, but no optional size or color upgrades.
The Sport also has no automatic headlights or daytime running lights versus the Sport S having automatic headlights and optional daytime running lights.

The Overland and Rubicon
With the Overland (Luxury) and the Rubicon (Off-Road Ready) being better equipped, the standard features are also better. Starting with the amp alternator, these models get a standard 220-amp vs. the 180-amp alternator.
They also include premium cloth bucket seats with the Overland having its own specific premium cloth bucket seats. However, only the Rubicon model has regular leather trim available as an option. LED ambient interior lighting is standard on both these models. Automatic and daytime running headlights are both standard on the two models, as well.
The largest aesthetic difference between the Overland and Rubicon are the wheels. The Rubicon offers the 17-inch wheels in both silver or black aluminum; however, the Overland is the only trim that has standard 18-inch wheels in granite silver aluminum (but no other option).
